Hey guys! Apparently my DS comp is scheduled to arrive this Thursday and I'm unbelievably excited but I still need a mouse and a keyboard. Right now the mice I'm looking at are the G5 (there are two versions I guess?), MX518, and the Razer DeathAdder 3G. For keyboards, I've been looking at the G11 and G15. So which mouse/keyboard combo would be the best choice? Or do you have any other recommendations (cheaper especially
)?

The mx518 is the older model that the G5 was based off of, generally the G5 is more preferred than it as well. The two versions of the G5 are essentially the same except the blue one is a redux of the orange one with a different grip coating/paint scheme/extra button along the side.
As for Razer, the copperhead is generally the g5's opponent, it's actually a few dollars cheaper and has more options for the DPI settings. The deathadder isn't really worth your attention it seems.
If you elect to go with the older G15 it's only $60 instead of the $90 version on newegg, whereas both Razer keyboards are out of stock but the cost is also $90.

I personally love my G15 Gaming Keyboard; they came out with a new G15 now too but it dosent have the LCD screen or the G Keys. The screen is a great tool too; for seeing your stat in-game; and it works with ventrillo as well.

The G5 is the successor of the MX518.
The rev2 of G5 has 2 thumb buttons instead of one |

I have a Saitek Eclipse II for my keyboard. Not a "real" gaming keyboard per say but I only bought it because of the backlit keys... I don't need the little screens and macros that some of the real gaming keyboards out there have.
As for a mouse, I was deciding between a G5 and one of Razer's offerings. I don't like the G5's feel because I control my mouse with my fingers rather than my palm so I went with the new Diamondback 3g. I haven't even plugged it in yet and I have had it for a week or two now but it feels good in the hand at least.

Hmmm... ok.
Well let me ask you guys this. Does having a "gaming" keyboard/mouse really make that much of a difference? |

I recently picked up a Saitek Eclipse II. The keys have a great feel and its backlit for low-light night time gaming. I dig it. Plus newegg had it for $30 to VIP members a few weeks back. The G15 seemed a bit much for me, and also I use a Nostromo 52 for some games and the G15 with its extra G keys was just too wide.
For a mouse I use the mx518, and I used a 510 before it. If a G5 is the newest iteration of that, I'd recommend it based on reputation alone.
As for your question, I don't know that the keyboard makes that big of a difference when gaming, though I imagine key feel and responsiveness is going to help your game some.
Mice definitely make a difference. Something comfortable and high speed is going to greatly improve your aim and response time on screen. And equally important, I think, is your mouse pad. A few years ago I picked up a funcPAD and haven't looked back since. Basically they are extra large, hard surface (hardly flexible) mouse pads. They make movement much more fluid and consistant. Don't underestimate your mousepad.
I just use the original 1030.

With gaming keyboards, I don't really see the difference. With gaming mice? Huge difference! After I switched to my razer, using any other mouse makes me feel like I'm using it under water.

I am addicted to my Logitech TrackMan track ball mouse. I can not do my FPS games with out it. I just ordered a new one to hook up to me ordered rig.
Going to keep my old one on hand as a spare.

I use a G5 and a Wave keyboard. Here's the bottom line on the accessories. If you suck at the game, accessories aint gonna help ya.
I've played the Battlefield series from the days of 1942 to Desert Combat, and all the way through the lame 2142. I spent most of my clanning days in Desert Combat and was ranked one of the top pilots in the game along with many other good ones. I used a simple Logitech keyboard and mouse set-up and a Logitech 3D Pro stick. I took many other pilots that were on TS and I knew were using split sticks. I'm not saying this to brag, but what defines you as an arena gamer apart from the rest is the time you put into the game learning the gear and its maximum potential. I'm talking about the PC gear and the virtual gear in the game that you compete with. All the lights, bells and whistles are fluff and stories you can tell your friends when they come over to look at your set-up. When you get in the game and start getting owned by really good arena gamers, all the warmth of the pretty keyboard and mouse will be gone and you'll be left with your lack of skills. Don't blame the gear! Hope I didn't piss on anybodies parade here, but I'm coming from around 10 years of gaming in a series that required you to use every tactical measure, infantry to equipment, land and air, to overcome your opponent. I've know players that mastered the keyboard flying in Desert Combat and owned the skies. It's not a bad thing to have top of the line equipment to perform in the arena. It's just bad when you think that all that equipment is going to pull you through games that require skills. But, it is nice to have a pretty set-up as you're getting your ass handed to you. ![]() |

What ever you are comfortable with... I don't use a gaming keyboard because I'm comfortable with a Logitech Media and I use a gaming mouse because I'm comfortable with it =x |

Hehe well that's the thing. Right now I'm using some crappy unnamed keyboard and a Dell rollerball mouse but I still own at the games I play - Halo, CS:S, etc. I've just heard a lot of people say that when they switched to a mouse designated for "gaming," they felt it tightened up their play a bit. But I mean, I mainly am asking cuz the "gaming" accessories are quite a bit more expensive than the "normal" accessories so I just wanted to see if the money was well spent you know? I, just the other day ordered a Razer Lycosa Gaming Keyboard. I have right now a HP keyboard that I got with my very first computer over 8 years ago! Does it work? Heck ya, and it has gotten me through tons of FPS and helped me become top of my game in multiplayer BF1942, and Modern Combat and Battlefield 2 and Planet Side (remember that MMO?) as well as everything from Max Payne to HL2.
But, I wanted a new key board to go with my new rig, thats under construction. I wanted one that is simple, but back lighted and has a super fast response time, the Razer does all that.
My MOST important tool though is my mouse. I have a Logitech Trackman track ball thumb mouse. Let me tell you, if you have never tried one of these in FPS multiplayer, you do not know what your missing! This is the ONLY mouse to allow you to rule the battlefield!
You will see. Once my rocking DSO rig arrives, look for me on the COD4 battlefield. Ya, thats me.... The guy with the top score!

Yeah I think I'm gonna take your advice on this one. I'll prolly head down to my local Best Buy and just check out the mice and keyboards that they have there (hopefully I can actually hold them lol) and see which one suits my style most. I'm definitely getting a laser mouse though ![]() |

Serious Nomad, check out the Razer Lycosa Gaming Keyboard! It is a great and easy gaming keyboard and the response times are crazy! And also, if you want a chance against me on the battle field, check out the Logitech mouse. It is the bomb on FPS games. Links below:

Ah man I'm kinda torn on that keyboard there. It's a bit pricey... but it looks really, really tight! Sweet! TBH, I've never used a trackball for gaming so I'd have to try it out. Like I said, I think I'll head down to my local Best Buy so I can hopefully try out all these keyboards and mice and see which ones just feel right you know? |

I use the G15 KB and the G7 wireless muse. The G7 is awesome...I know many gamers shiver at the thought of using a wireless mouse but the G7 is truly awesome. It has never let me down and battery life is amazing. If you have questions about it, let me know...
