I recently purchased the Alienware m11x R2 and have realized that dealing with DELL is pretty much a nightmare. For all I know the m11x might be a great gaming compy...I wouldn't know though...I received it almost 2 weeks ago, and after logging MANY MANY hours on the line with Alienware tech support, and having a tech visit my house, I still have not been able to do anything with it but look at it. It sure makes a nice looking paper weight!
So now Dell is SUPPOSED to be sending me a new one. But I see on their website that they've canceled my latest shipment (of the new m11x). So I think I'm at my wit's end with them. I think I'm just going to tell them to keep it & I'll buy a DS gaming lappy. So that's what brings me here. I'm looking for a lappy that will run WoW fairly well, but also allow me to start getting back into 1st person shooters. I want to pretty much start playing new games again (I haven't been able to since my 4 year old computer is pretty much out of date). So I'd like a computer that can handle any game I throw at it right now...and for at least the next 2 years to come. So will this do? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chassis: Digital Storm xm15 5125 (Weight: 5.73 LBS) Display: 15.6 inch Full HD LED Display with Enhanced Super Glossy Surface (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7-620M 2.66GHz (4MB Cache) (Dual Core) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 at 1066MHz (High-Performance) Inputs: Gigabit Ethernet LAN / Card Reader / eSATA Main Storage: 320GB (7200 RPM) (16MB Cache) (SATA Laptop Hard Drive) Extra Storage: - No Thanks Raid Options: - No Thanks Optical Drive: DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Wireless Access: 802.11 B/G/N Wireless LAN Module Features: Integrated Video Camera / Bluetooth Outputs: HDMI 1080P / DVI Port / SPDIF Audio / Headphone / Microphone Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 1GB (Features Optimus Technology for Increased Battery Life) External TV Tuner: - No Thanks Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Protection: - No Thanks Office Suite: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Carry Bag: Basic Carrying Bag External Cooling: - No Thanks External Keyboard: - No Thanks External Mouse: - No Thanks External Speakers: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Full Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Labor & 1 Year Parts Warranty ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Any input is greatly appreciated. |

@CArnold40,
Thank you for your interest in Digital Storm! We would love to earn your business. The laptop you currently selected (xm15) is a great laptop, but honestly, if you want to throw any game at it and get fluid, smooth game play, you should look at our (x15) model which has a better dedicated graphics card. |

I'm hinging on the i7 processor, but wondering if 8 GB RAM AND the i7 processor is overkill? What would be your recommendation be on the RAM and processor? (keeping in mind how I described how I'd use my system in my first post) Edited by CArnold40 - 27 Sep 2010 at 2:39pm |

Go for an SSD for the main drive, even if it means saving for another month.

Ya think I might be better off dropping down to 4 GB RAM & staying with the i5 processor, and going with a SSD? |

Pretty much the way Id go if I were going to do it.
On a side note, I had/have an alienware gaming laptop an Area-51m It never lived up to the hype, always had problems with the audio, it generated enough heat to fry your dinner and weighed in at 12.5 pounds....with a 2 hour battery life if I was lucky, Alienware really let me down. |

Oh, I totally understand. That's why I am here. No sense in going too far into it, but Alienware really let me down too. |
