So I've been looking at possibilities for a gaming laptop, and I'm afraid I don't know much about the components, or what makes a good one.

I've had both Nvidia and ATI cards in my desktops, but how to the mobile chips compare, and more importantly, how hot does the machine get?

Is the i7 an essential component for a high end laptop?

I mostly play Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Starcraft 2, and will likely play the expansions of both in the near future.

What kind of graphics/processor would I need to play them at high settings without frame rate problems? What about medium settings?

At this point I am just pricing things out.

Also, the laptop must not have a webcam. Is this something DS can comply with?

What makes you want a laptop over a desktop? For use as a gaming machine, you'll pay a considerable amount more for less taking power

Gaming laptops are an oxymoron. The mobile version of most components, especially the GPUs, are vastly less powerful than the desktop versions.

You pay huge premiums for the small form factor and mobility, but despite the premiums you still lose way too much performance.

Better to just get a gaming desktop, and if you still have a need a super cheapy laptop for mobile internet access. Cyber Monday is the best for finding super cheapy laptop sales, so start looking before the day is up! Though as a heads up, the Black Friday/Cyber Monday specials stock in some places like say Wal-Mart are usually specifically just for those sales and stays that price until they run out of stock, not when those specific days are over, so don't panic too much if you can't find anything by the end of the day.

I'm looking ahead to the future, and my current plan is to enlist by the end of next year. It would be a bit difficult to take my desktop with me.
