Topic: Gaming Laptop Questions Posted: 05 Feb 2011 at 2:27pm |
Hey guys, my price range is between 1500-2000 dollars and I was contemplating getting this laptop
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/laptoploadsaved.asp?id=482257 I have a few important questions: 1) Will this set up run new FPS games with a frame rate between 50-70 on higher settings? 2) How long will it take for this setup to become outdated? 3) Can it be upgraded (not a huge concern) Thanks, Opressor |

1. depends on the game, but the laptop will get hot after a while.
2. depends what you mean by outdated, by end of this year, this setup will not have teh newest cpu and gpu in it. 3. you can't upgrade laptops other then hdd and ram, gpu can't be upgraded. for gaming a desktop is what you want. |

I don't have a choice but to get a laptop, I'm heading to university next year and it's not like I can carry a desktop around with me.
I would really appreciate it if you could be more specific with your answer, I know the laptop is going to get hot but that wasn't my question. Lets say battlefield bad company 2, and battlefield 3 when it comes out. By outdated I mean it will no longer be able to run the newest generation of games with decent FPS and decent settings. By decent FPS, I mean 50-60 and high settings. So, when will I need to replace it. Edited by Opressor - 05 Feb 2011 at 8:50pm |

Hard to tell with a laptop to be honest, from what I'm seeing now, a 460m for example is getting 29 fps with highest settings and 4xaa at 1900 x 1200, at that rate by end of next year you would have problems, at a lower res you would be ok.

That sort of sucks, although I expected as much for a laptop.
So, basically 14-16 months from now it's going to be junk? |

I can't say honestly, it all depends on the games and etc, it certainly is not a great start.

I can help a bit.
I purchased a POS HP laptop about five years ago. It had an NVIDIA 8600M GS. Was the best i could buy at that point. This still plays wow on high, and call of duty aswell. Will it still be decent in a year or two? Sure, decent. Will it be as good as a new machine, no friggin way but is is playable. WIth the rig you are designing it will NOT be a piece of junk, but just not as good as a new one in 15 months. Things will still be playable, etc. obviously if you want to have a state of the art machine desktops are the only way to stay current at a smaller cost (Upgrades down the road, etc) but laptops can be great for a good 2-3 years. |
