    Posted: 27 Nov 2011 at 12:58am
This is my first time configuring a gaming rig, so I'm unsure about needing SLI and a few other things. My budget is @$2500, and I'll primarily be playing Skyrim and BF3, and doing little else, maybe some movies and music.

I would like this to be upgradable later, but I want to make sure get as good a system as I can afford right now.

I have an old Dell 19" 1907, so my maximum resolution is 1280 x 1024. My saved configuration number is 624070, and the cost of my current build is somewhat less than my max budget, so I can upgrade if necessary.

Any advice would be appreciated.

you add a hdd to that as hdd2 when hdd prices come back down, within the next 6 months add a second 570, new gpus are coming out so they prices of 570 will be lower if you are lucky.

and you got yourself a great res and a beast to run it.

let me know if you don't want to go that direction cause for your current res this build is way too much.

your thoughts

Thanks for the great suggestion on my build. I've needed a new monitor, since I've had this one for as long as I can remember, so this is a good excuse to get new one.

My only hesitation would be adding the 2nd 570 myself, since I've never done more than add memory and replace hard drives before. So if it's fairly simple, this looks like a good rig for me.

Installing a GPU is very very easy. Just take the necessary brackets off the back of the case that the new GPU brackets will go into. The cards slip in fairly easily and I'm sure there are plenty how-to vids on youtube you can look at.

Once the card is seated properly connect the PCI-e power cable and the SLI cable. Then boot up the PC. Make a quick stop in the BIOS to enable the card on the MOBO and then adjust your settings in windows accordingly.

The SLI addition seems fairly easy then, so it looks like that's what I'll do. I did notice the new config has air instead of the liquid cooling - I'm not going to run into any issues what that, am I?

I've never had liquid cooling before, and don't seem to have had any issues, but if the computer is on for long periods of time during gameplay with the new config, that won't cause problems will it?

Thanks.

You would have to go all the way up to the Stage 4 liquid cooling before you will beat the temps of the air cooler that DST listed in the build.

The HAF X case has great air flow (it stands for High Air Flow after all) and so long as you put your case in an area that has good ventilation (as in not under your desk) and so long as you have good room temps of below 75 degrees you should be just fine. 68-70 degrees would be better but not everyone can always keep their room that cool. Going above 75 degrees for room temp can be bad though.

Liquid cooling requires good air flow and good room temps, the same as air cooling.

Thanks jmaster299, I very much appreciate the advice. The case will be in a fairly cool room, so the air cooling should be more than sufficient for this build then.
