Hi guys, This is maybe slightly off topic, but I was wondering if anyone out there had a favorite router. My Belkin seems to be dropping connections more and more frequently and I think it might be time to go get something new! Some things about my network usage patterns! The most important thing is having a low latency for playing games such as World of Warcraft or any of the multitude of FPS's. I'm the only user, so I can make sure that there are no big downloads going on while playing. I do have to copy some big files around the home network every once in a while (Oracle datafiles for instance) so a gigabit LAN would be nice. However, I'd like to keep the price below $100 so I may have to drop the gigabit requirement! I also have a TiVo connected via 802.11g so I do need wireless. Thanks very much for any advice you guys may have to offer! |

Anyone have opinions on a decent router? Come on, this is the internet, everyone has an opinion! :) Seriously though, any thoughts on this? Thanks!

I am a fan of linksys routers as i have the N-gage which has excellant wireless output and great security. That ran me about $79.99 earlier last year. Plus i got the linksys wireless card to match my router for $60 bucks so my fiancee' can use that while i hard wire.

I also like Linksys and I have used Belkin and D-Link before as well.
What router you choose really depends on your connection speed. I just
got Comcast Extreme, 50mb download and 10mb upload. I currently have
the WRT160n v3 ($79 from newegg) but it limits my upload speed to 7mb, it was a good router until I upgraded my service.
Since you are a gamer you want the router to have QoS which can be configured so that your game gets the most bandwidth and Tivo does not. Here is a link that I am using to determine which router I will purchase next. http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/index.php?option=com_chart&Itemid=189 I am also a gamer and the Linksys WRT160n v3 was great, I enjoy low pings while in games and I never had connection problems. I can't tell you how long it will last since I have only had it for 2 months. Edited by e06028 - 05 Jan 2010 at 7:25pm |

I am looking for a decent router that does not disconnect when playing games via LAN.
I currently have a Linksys WRT300N, but at looking at customer reviews on CNET, it gets only 2 out of 5 stars. I have problems with Total War games lately with disconnecting, and when the Host computer drops the connection, my other computer will freeze up. <ouch>
Any suggestions on a decent router with less chance of disconnecting?
thx,
Grape
