Ok, I configured this for my son and finally we're committing to buy. Son says his old Digital Storm about 7 years old heats up and turns off with most gaming now. I posted once before and the current system was not upgradeable. Too old. What I wanted to do is get him this computer where it will play most of his games till he graduates college. He is going to be a junior and will be doing a Master's program so this system needs to be good for at least four years. If he gets his Master's, I'll get him one of the top end systems and I'll take this one.

Question is, games he plays are alot but I know three are Smite, Battlefield 3 and Diable 3. Don't know why the computer turns off but it only turns off while playing the games. I upgraded the memory to 16GB from 8GB so don't know if I really need to do that. Also was going to upgrade graphics card from the 770 2gb to the 780 3gb for $203 more but don't know if I need to do that. Any suggestions where I really need something or don't need something on what I configured? Thanks in advance,

Earl

Hi earbogast... That's a nice build.    The gtx 780 is about 20% or better frames over the gtx 770. Here's a link to compare...http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1037?vs=1036

The gtx 770 will play most games on High to Max on a 1920x1080 monitor.   BF3 or Diablo will be no problem . The 780 will give a bit more longevity over the next couple of years. Either are excellent gaming cards.

8gb ram is all you need for gaming.   The 16gb has become pretty standard but not used much as of yet.

Your old rig..... if it's shutting down during gaming, I suspect you have an overheating issue. Get some canned air and blow out the graphics card, from fan through the exit ports. Also blow out the cpu coolers cooling vanes.   Dust loves to pile up in tight spaces.

Download and run the free HWMONITOR while gaming to check cpu core and gpu temps.   Below 85C is usually safe.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Same system except I downgraded to 8gb of ram and then upgraded the video card from the 770 2gb to the 780 3gb.
