Hi everyone! I'm new to the DS community and while I haven't purchased anything yet, I do have a few questions.
1.) I live in New Jersey which is obviously quite far away from California and since I'm probably looking to buy a $1900 laptop (which is very expensive to me as a student and a musician) I'm wondering if DS pays for the initial shipping to get it to me? 2.) Considering that I'm fairly tech/gamer savvy myself, if there ever was an issue where I needed a replacement part, but could do the switch myself, would DS pay to ship the part to me? I imagine they would pay for the replacement part as long as I'm within the warranty. 3.) Do they have a large customer base outside of California? I'm curious to know if there's anyone else on the east coast who has purchased from them! I'd be more than happy to get any answers from other customers or Alex, as i noticed that he seems to be the go getter for the forums! |

Hey, geneticsman. Welcome to the forums. In answer to your question:
1) No. They do not. However, if I remember correctly, shipping to PA was not all that bad cost-wise. 2) Generally, within the first 30 days, DS will pay to ship your laptop for repairs. After that, they will not, but they will pay the price of the part, depending on what warranty you get, for between 1 and 3 years, and they if the part is still within company warranty. 3) From what I have seen so far, they have customers in India, Portugal, Switzerland, and Australia. I have also heard of customers in Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, etc. Also, they have at least one lifelong customer in PA (although I would wager that the actual number is much greater). Trust me when I say that I was in (almost) the exact same position, and I was hesitant at first for the exact same reasons, but I went ahead and bought (strangely enough) a $1900 laptop, and everything has been great. I had a few questions beforehand, and when I contacted DS, I had immediate help. I have spoken to/emailed Richard, Alex, and John at one point or another, and I can not even begin to describe how much nicer it has been than Dell or HP tech support. Everyone speaks English, and the people on the other end know what they are talking about. The conversations feel like this: YOU: Hey, Alex. I noticed that I was unable to upgrade the drivers on my 630M to the 301.24, and instead I had to go with the beta 304.79 drivers. Can you help? ALEX: Sure. The correct drivers are attached. YOU: Thanks, Alex. You're the best. By the way, have you been paying attention to the news about the GTX 690s? ALEX: They don't come out for another three weeks, and I already can't wait. You should see the setups we are creating, just for them. Some pictures are coming to the forums soon, and the new models should be available immediately after the cards come out. It will be awesome. YOU: That sounds awesome. I can't wait. Actually, if you don't mind answering, I have a question about Haswell; when I upgrade, will I need to swap out the motherboard, or just the chip? ALEX: Unfortunately, Haswell will have a different socket, so the mobo also needs to be replaced for an upgrade. YOU: Thanks, man. ALEX: No problem. If you ever need anything, or just want to chat, shoot me an email. Okay? YOU: Sure. (Thinking on the inside: OH MY GOD! THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN DELL OR HP TECH SUPPORT! I LOVE DS!) As opposed to this: Random guy with strong accent: Hello, and welcome to Dell tech support. I am Bill. YOU: Is Bill your real name? Bill: Actually, it is Rashmanthingkinmatunghuknam, but the people I talk have to say is easier say Bill. YOU: Okay, Bill. I have an issue with my printer. BILL: Have you tried turning it on and off? YOU: Yes. I also tried reinstalling the drivers and connecting it to a different port. BILL: Have you disconnect the port cable side computer printer from? YOU: What? BILL: Port cable side? YOU: Huh? BILL: One second. Manager here. He make all better. YOU: Okay. MANAGER: Have you tried turning it on and off? YOU: I'm hanging up, now. (Hang up) Edited by Orange7 - 08 Sep 2012 at 6:02am |

i live on the east coast, and made 2 purchases from DS. shipping costs are not too bad, pretty much the norm for safely shipping a computer in my opinion. they are easily the best out there, both in the products they offer, and the customer service they provide. you might be paying a bit more than some other sites, but it is more than worth it.
regarding your question about shipping replacement parts, once youre outside the initial 30 day warranty, you will have to pay shipping for replacement parts, but DS covers the cost of the part, which is the large majority of the cost. i had to get a new psu, and DS made the process as painless as possible. |

Hi everyone! Thanks for posting all the replies and info! I'm planning to place my order this coming Tuesday with my dad. I also recently spoke to a sales rep over the phone who was very polite and patient (I think his name was Gerardo) to ask a few more questions and he assured me that I could talk to someone on the phone while I placed my order online in order to ensure that it went very smoothly. While he sounded tired, he was enthusiastic nevertheless!
All of these factors, plus that they're in the US and that they're very responsive, has given me the confidence to go ahead and give DS a try! I'll be looking forward to placing my order on Tuesday! |
