Order time is approaching. Would like thoughts on my HD selections. Also just general config, ways to trim some cost without decreasing performance.

My thoughts on the HDs are based on my current 6 year old rig. I have one 80gig HD which still has 39 gigs of free space. So historically I don't require much space. I thought the 32 SSD for OS, Norton, Adware etc. And a 74 Velociraptor for games and programs (microsoft student and everything else). Looks like DS only offers a 74 digital raptor. Are 74 Velociraptors available?

Lets see if I'm smart enough to link to my config.Ouch Probably not. The # is 184984.

geezy peet, you can get a 300GB velociraptor for the same cost as your build which just has two drives but just 106GB

I'd want a biger HD just for elbow room.

I read where the new 300GB VR HDD is very fast, a good bit faster than the old raptor HDD you are looking at.

Don't be fooled to think if they both have 10K RPMs they are the same speed. the only one called Velociraptor is the 300GB HDD the other drives are old raptor HDD quite a bit slower I believe.

Some tests show the new VR close to performance of solid state drives.

Me -- I got 300GB VR as first and 500GB drive as second.

I believe better to have too much room than not enough, but it sounds like you could get away with just one 300GB VR which would cost the same as your two tiny drive set up.
