When comparing the same processor for a gaming rig, what difference will the processor speed give me?

Processor speed makes some difference in games, but it's not huge. For example, if you're playing a game on a 2.6 GHz system and getting 50 frames per second, then at best you would get 62 frames per second on a 3.2 GHz system. That assumes the game is CPU bound, which rarely happens. The video card is usually the bottleneck, so most likely you would see your framerate go up to something like 55 with a faster CPU.

In short, a faster CPU always helps. However, it's not always worth the money.

Anything 3.2-5 will be enough for most games. From there the GPU's will be handling everything.

On the older 680/780/790 boards there is a huge bottleneck between CPU, GPU, and RAM.  Overclocking even just the CPU via the FSB increased framerates quite a bit.

Also nvidia says anything under 3Ghz will bottleneck a pc using the GTX200'S in even 2-way sli. The cards send to much info for the cpu to keep up with under 3Ghz.
