I broke down and ordered the Gigabyte M28U 4K Monitor. I hope it turns out as decent as most of the reviews that I have read. I got my new DS computer a year ago but finally got around to upgrading the monitor.
By the way, Happy New Year to all my friends and friends to be on the Digital Storm Board! ![]() |

The Gigabyte M28U arrived yesterday and I absolutely love my new 4K monitor. Here is a video that I made today in 4K which I think came out pretty good for a racing game.

I can get about 70fps Max on 4K with Ultra settings in Forza racing games. This is at 98%-100% GPU utilization which warms the room and gets the electric meter spinning. Oh, yes you can hear the 3080 fans get loud struggling to cool the GPU innards. The GPU temperature gets in the range of 70C-75C at full load.
The M28U has AMD Freesync but Variable Frame Rate works fine with the Gsynch based 3080. The M28U has a built in KVM that will be handy for using the monitor to switch to a second PC. There is a type C USB port so you can plug your phone etc into it to display on the big monitor also. I like having the mouse & keyboard plugged into the monitor. Reviewers have said that getting a 4K 144Hz IPS monitor for under $600 is a great deal. I know that I love it so far. Perhaps a newer 4080 would push the frame rate up in Ultra settings to 144Hz in my racing game. I do know that getting 4K 144hz Ultra graphics settings takes a lot of horsepower! I think a person with a 3080 would have to turn their settings down somewhat in most high end games to get 144Hz graphics out of the monitor. But 70PFS on Ultra graphics with variable frame rate works & looks stunningly beautiful. ![]() |

Hey Ken…thanks for the info. I gave a lot of thought to going 4K with my last rig but stayed with 1440p. Your posting has me thinking again. Tough to do as I get older.
![]() My 3070 is probably my card until 5 series cards come out. Not impressed with the 4 series, either performance or cost. 4090 is the only one I like but the price is over the top. Anyways, love your driving skills. Very similar to my landing skills with helos and F18s on carriers. ![]() Have fun. I do have to try a good driving game some day soon. |

bprat22,
One of the nice things is Nvidia series Gsync on better GPUs like we have will work with AMD FreeSynch on the M28U. Maybe not perfectly but will allow Variable Frame Rate to be engaged to avoid screen tears and stuff. Especially when your input frame rate is less than 144hz which will be most of the time on highest graphic settings. :-) On Ultra graphic settings I can get about 100 FPS on Forza 4 and a little better than 60FPS or so on Forza 5 with my EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra 10GB GPU. I think your 3070 would be OK but you would likely have to mess with graphic settings to get a frame rate up above 60 on Ultra graphic settings. 144Hz would be pretty tough as it is for me even with a 3080. But I tell you once you see 4K in Ultra settings you will accept low frame rates just to bask in the gorgeous beauty of the scenic environment available in the AAA games. If you are interested in FPS competitive stuff where 144Hz can save you from a bullet, then by all means turn the graphics down to get the full 144Hz on the 3070 or 3080. :-) By the way, I paid $566.29 for my new Gigabyte M28U 4K IPS monitor on Amazon delivered. I am very happy with it and also use the KVM feature for display control of my 12 year old Digital Storm computer with a push of a button. 4K will make your electric company happy. When I am fired up on Ultra graphics at 4K my 3080 fans are 100% and the GPU gets up to 70-75C on Forza 5. Nice space heater during a cold Winter! :-) The USB type C port will allow you to use the big display on your phone or tablet etc. For what it is worth, I never had a 1440 monitor but I can now watch them too obviously. 1440P is significantly better than 1080P graphically and I can appreciate the difference. With 4K you can see the individual blades of grass, individual facial whiskers, shiny glimmering surfaces and perfect reflections from pools of water etc. At least for the moment the incredible immersive experience I get from running 4K Ultra graphics still awes me! I literally feel like I am actually in that gaming world. Of course, a few beers makes everything seem better than it really is. :-) It would be hard to go back to 1080P. :-) |

I created my first 4K Fractal Mandelbrot Deep Zoom that looks incredible. I need to work on the program a little bit to make it smoother on the zoom process since it had been optimized to 1200P and needs to be tweaked for 4K.
If anybody is interested here is the link to my incredibly beautiful Deep Mandelbrot Zoom. :-) [4K] MANDELBROT FRACTAL DEEP ZOOM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thOSg5QzWj4 ![]() ![]() ![]() |

WOW!! ![]() ![]() Just watched in 1440 and it those should have a warning! ![]() You are an artist. ![]() And , yes, after a certain point the jerkiness becomes noticeable.

Hoseerator,
Each of the 4K pixels on the screen is checked against the Mandelbrot formula by iterating up to 500,000,000 times in each of the 200 or so movie frames. This takes several hours even though the 5900X is running 100% on all 12 cores and 24 threads. Each of these 200 or so frames double the magnification as it goes to the next frame. So the magnification ends up being something like 2 to the 200 power or 1.6069380442589902755419620923412e+60. This is like going from the size of the observable universe down to the size of subatomic particles. The jerkiness is associated with the interframe transition time and the doubling of magnification with each frame. It was smoother at a lower creation resolution but there are several parameters I can tweak to try to get rid of the jerkiness. Thanks for watching. I was happy with how nice graphically the zoom movie came out. ![]() |
