Topic: Glad I waited! Posted: 13 Apr 2012 at 6:00pm |
So initially I was going to buy a new rig with the help of Bprat, and I was also advised I might want to wait b/c the 680's are around the corner! Well I waited and the 680's are here... expensive but here... So i tinkered with the config settings with a cooler hafx case, and here is what I have, please let me know if I overlooked something, or something should be edited. The reason why I chose Win. 7 Pro 64 bit was for different language packs, I would like to type in Korean.
I am going to use the Dell Ultrasharp U2412M monitor 1920X1200 resolution, and I want to play my games on Ultra Settings: I typically play SWTOR, SC2, Tera, GW2, etc. I'm also wondering, for my resolution and the games I play, are 2 680's overkill? I just want to future proof myself thats all... ok sorry for the blabbering, time for the build! build # 675413 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2700K 3.50 GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 (Intel Z68 Chipset) (Features Intel Quick Sync Technology) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (120GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 320 Series) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2GB (PhysX) (Overclocked EVGA 02G-P4-2682-BR) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 SE2011 Extreme Performance H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz (Requires Pro or Deluxe Series Motherboard) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Any help would be greatly appreciated ! |

Hi again yuntanman....You don' t need 16GB memory for gaming. 8GB is really all you need. The i7-2700 chip will give you nothing over the oc'd i7-2600k. As far the the sli gtx680..... for the games you mentioned a single would do it. However, if you play BF3 or Metro, etc on Ultra settings there would be times when the frames drop into the 50's. Still great gaming but some want 60 plus at all times. Then a sli would be needed for just a few extra fps. You could try the single and add later if you felt the need. They are expensive cards. Not to put off your rig any longer, but in another month or two gtx 650/660 are due and would be cheaper to sli. There's always sometging new just over the horizon. Hope this helps.

I wanted to try the single route, then possibly upgrade to another 680 however I have never pieced parts for a computer, and afraid of messing something up if i tired, and if i want DS to do it, I would have to wait FOREVER haha b/c i live in the east coast... sigh...
in your opinion you think dual 660's would save me a bundle? |

The configuration looks good, however, if it's out of your budget, you could definitely make some changes per the suggestions by bprat22.
There's always going to be new hardware coming out, but, the GTX 680's are definitely some powerful beasts. In SLI, they will rip through anything, and will deliver you fluid smooth game play for a very long time.

Like Alex said, if it's in the budget go sli. You could wait forever for the right hardware and never get anything. Sli 680 will destry anything for years. Thing is, a single 680 almost does it, but not quite for extreme gaming. Nvidia probably planned it that way

yuntanman...I forgot to answer about the next kepler cards, like the gtx660/650. RUMOR is , and can't say for sure, but the gtx660/650 might arrive in May and the gtx660, comparable to 580, would be about $150 cheaper per card then the gtx680. The gtx 650, comparable to gtx570 or 560, about $50-100 cheaper than that.
This is all speculation.

Unfortunately 28nM chips from TSMC are still in very tight supply and according to news stories that supply is unlikely to start improving until 3Q, so real availability of putative new mid-range kepler cards may be take quite some time.
Yuntanman, while, as several folks have pointed out, you can wait and never get anything, the new Ivy Bridge CPUs will be available at months end so in this case waiting another 2 wks might something to consider. Marty |

I am growing very impatient.... i think im just going to order the ODE V2 level 4 tonight and instead of 1920X1200 res, i'll just drop to 1920X1080 for less GPU demand. the price is great I think....
bprat any suggestions, and I decided to forget the ivy bridge since it seems as though it will be minimal improvement in gaming vs the sandy bridge ... someone help me! |

But that ODE V2 Level 4 will keep us rocking for a while. I was hoping to have my new rig ready for Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2....

yuntanman...For the games you listed and the resolution 1920x1080, the ODE 4 with single 680 will be all you need and you save $$$.
If you plan on upping the monitor or going to other games like BF3 and want Ultra settings and have to keep fps in the 60's and 70's at all times ,then you can't sli the ODE 4. I guess you need to know...will you ever buy another 680 or up the monitor to a 30"? It's all about the $$$$$. Good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 19 Apr 2012 at 6:31am |

So I guess I will do that then, bpratt just out of curiousity, on the screen res. I will be using now 1920X1080, would i be able to maintain frame rates in the 60's for BF3, that is a game that my friend recommended to play so I was just curious. If not in ultra settings maybe a step down would give me that magic frame rate of 60?
thanks a lot bpratt... after your response i will be placing my order! |

also I realized that the ODE v2 lvl 4 doesn't come with the EVGA GPU, is there a big difference in what i'm buying in comparison to EVGA?

A single 680 will play your res. On ultra most of the time. Benchmark have shown it dipping into mid 50's when all hell breaks loose on some outside maps like Operation Firestorm because of the distance rendering, etc. But overall, it will be great. Even 50's is very good especially when it's only for a moment. Most gpu cards are very good. Not a problem.

I understand your concern of what brand card you might get. To ease your mind go to Newegg and look at the different brands like Evga, Msi, Galaxy, etc . They all have very good reviews. DS does stress test them, burn them in, before shipping. Any brand can give you a dud. Good luck and let us know.

Ok ordering today the ode c2 lvl 4, do I need to request core less than 1.4 even though it's a premise line up?

Congrats yuntanman...hoping to join the customer ranks sometime very soon myself. Keep finding reasons to delay the order. Curious to hear how long it takes to build and of course how she runs when you get it all hooked up.
Gratz again. |

yuntanman...That's a good question. Being a pre-config I'm not sure. There is no Special Instructions at bottom of config page. I would do it anyways, request vcore 1.4 or less if it's at final checkout. Can't hurt. At best, they do it, or they do what they do.
Best of luck and like josephlee said, let us know what you think

That resolution is perfect. Go to a IPS 1920x 1080 and never look back. The 23 or 24" is great.
