I just got a copy of vista 64 bit cause im upgrading my low budget build a little bit. I currently have 32 bit vista installed on my drive. Is it mandatory to do a clean install, or can I just upgrade what I have to 64 bit with the disk. Its not a pleasant thought having to move all those files and games around again

I actually just read up on it, and it states, and i quote...
You cannot perform an upgrade from a 32-bit version of Windows Vista to a 64-bit version of Windows Vista. You must use a full copy of Windows Vista to perform a clean installation of a 64-bit version. For instructions on how to perform a clean installation, see Installing and reinstalling Windows. For more information about installing and upgrading 64-bit versions of Windows, go to Installation choices for Windows Vista (64-bit) online. I wonder if I can still transfer game files and such....more reading it seems...

yes you can transfer files and such, install your vista 64bit on a new HDD then connect the 32bit drive to the PC, you will be able to see your old 32bit as a second drive and move files in between.
you cannot transfer installed apps and games. only personal/media/ files. to behonest you want to do a clean install anyways, upgrading a 32bit is only asking for trouble down the road. |
