Hi guys, I'm looking to buy my 2nd DS made rig, Just need some opinions for a new monitor to go with it. Cpu will be a Core i7-950 with standard DS ocing, 470 GTX evga superclock, and the 6gb ram at 1600mhz. For that i would like a monitor that can do 1920X1080 no problem or higher if possible, budget is $500 and screen size would prefer to b 22"-27". No shading or ghosting, best grey to grey, and anything else that helps with gaming in particular. Thanks for any help, input, or opinions.
Mike

im a big fan of LG and Samsung monitors, but for that budget, some here may suggest you get an IPS monitor
if you want to spend a little less, id suggest checking out your local best buy or similar stores, seeing monitors in person gives you a huge edge in seeing which look best to you
also, dont invest too much in the feature numbers like ms and contrast ratio, mfgs seem to be pretty liberal with these lately

If you care about image quality at all, and have the budget, stay far away from all TN based panels.
There are several monitors 24" in the $500.00 range that are very good.

justin is right, if you want a good panel get an ips.
stay away from LG they don't have the best quality, not in TVs and not in monitors, which why they are so cheap. |

About your rig though, superclocked version really aren't worth it. They use the same stock cooler, but just come with higher settings. In reality, I think you can just get a standard card, clock it up to superclocked speeds and be fine. lol. it's what I'm doing when I get my 570.

Not to sound like a complete noob, but i haven't even heard anything about this new line of gpu u, the 570 n 580, and i get pc gamer mag and maximum pc mag, so i try to stay up to date. is it worth bumping up to 1 of those cards maybe?

If you are getting what you need out of your current setup then no, there is no reason to upgrade.
teh 570/580 have a bit better performance and use less power. |

sorry to make 2 posts, but Justin, what would you suggest for brands in the 24" range? It would be appreciated if you could elaborate a bit more and be brand specific if you don't mind, thank you. Thank you to the Dst4m and !ender for your input as well.

I just order my DS rig also and am in about the same boat as the OP. I need a good monitor to run ~1950x1200 resolutions on. Do the IPS screens have poor response times for FPS style games? Edited by Clownshoes - 25 Dec 2010 at 6:48am |

NEC's has nice IPS monitor's but some are very expensive, HP's ips in that range is the ZR24W and dell's is the U2410

The members that have ips monitors here have not reported any lag or ghosting in fps games with mentioned HP and Dell ips panels.

I just got a NEC 23" IPS for $285. So far I have not noticed any lag or ghosting. It uses a LG screen as does most of the lower cost IPS monitors.

The NEC eIPS monitor is model EA231WMi. It was interesting that I registered it on a NEC site but got a response from LG thanking me for buying my EA231WMi monitor. I picked the NEC because it has a really good stand. The stand is heavy and can be adjusted in all directions including up and down and portrait.

Is that HP's real site or a scam page? That URL looks suspicious.

you get there from HP's site, go to HP's site then in their site search ZR24W, the search results will load, and on the left you will see this monitor, click on it and you will land on the page I posted.

Hey guys, I didn't want to post a new thread since there is already this one going. I have a smaller budget, trying to stay at 300 or less probably, but I need a good monitor for gaming. I play more mmos than fps games, but I obviously want to avoid ghosting if possible. Are viewsonic monitors any good? There is a 27'' on Amazon that sounds too good to be true.
http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic%252019s-VX2739WM-27-Inch-1920x1080-Monitor/dp/B003GBRXKU/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1293405613&sr=1-4 or they have this viewsonic which says it's an ips monitor but it's like half the cost of the dell/hp ips monitors. http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VP2365WB-23-Inch-IPS-Monitor/dp/B002R0JJYO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1293405959&sr=1-1 I'm trying to mix the right size/quality and would appreciate any advice :) |

I remember that viewsonic ips, I looked at it when I was looking for monitors as well. Upon checking it out, the response time is just blaagh. 14ms g2g, yeesh.

guys the b2b and g2g response times are all BS, never pay attention to them, there is no real way of getting a true response time, the closest to it is white to white but that would take a long time, so companies use grey to grey or black to black cause they produce smaller numbers, but its all bs.
ablahblah that is not 14ms g2g. with the names ips panels there is no ghosting, fyi. Edited by DST4ME - 26 Dec 2010 at 6:56pm |

Does anyone know of any stores that actually carry ips monitors? I called best buy, fry's, and abt with no luck. I want to actually see an ips monitor in person to see the difference from tn panels :/ I found dell's 23'' ultrasharp that seems to hit the sweet spot in price and with a decent ms. I guess, if I'm just gaming, you guys think an ips makes the games look noticeably better?

IPS panels have a better picture quality, this means whatever is on your monitor has better quality then the tn panel.
I don't know any stores that carry the hp or dell ips monitors. as I said before don't pay attention to response time, its bs. |

Yea that's what I was thinking DST4ME. Thanks again for all of your help. I'm bummed I can't see them in person, but I've read a lot of reviews and seen some good comparison videos. If I'm going the IPS route, I'm probably going with the Dell UltraSharp U2311H (I can't afford the larger ones heh). If I go TN, I'll probably go the Samsung route. I feel like it's harder to distinguish between the TN panels because there are so many options in my price point. If I finally pull the trigger on one, I'll post an update for anyone in a similar situation.

My pleasure and good luck
Every single person that got the dell or hp ips panel here last year, did nothing but rave about how great it was, and how they could tell the difference from their tn panel, we had over 10 people here that I asked to respond, and everybody so far has had nothing but great things to say about ips, none of them had problems with lag or ghosting, which I specifically asked them about. If I were you I would go ips for sure, even if you have to wait a bit longer to save more money, but that just me, to each his own, if you feel like the tn panel is the right choice for you, then be it, its your money get what makes you happy at the end ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 28 Dec 2010 at 1:49pm |

On the subject, you guys have any good suggestions for high end monitors? Is 120Hz or higher possible at 2560x1600? I'm thinking around a $500 budget, unless someone could make a convincing argument for a more expensive one.
I'm very monitor stupid, I have no idea where to even start. ![]() |

don't think you can touch any 2560x1600 for that price.
plus you would have to switch to ATI cards

Dang, they really that pricey? Well it's just a suggested budget, I can go higher.
And what's wrong with 2560x1600 on Nvidia cards, exactly? |
