Hi,
I have a wireless network. I only have 2 computers, the one that's connected to the cable and the other one that has the adapter for the wireless router. Today, Linksys is telling me that there are 2 devices connected to the network and not just the one computer. Why is it telling me this? I have nothing else connected to the wireless adapter. Could a new monitor do this? It's all that I've installed. Thanks in advance. Ps, how do I unconnect this device? |

Sounds like someone's riding your backbone. If you don't have it encrypted, you need to do it. Sounds like you have a neighbor that found your access point and is riding it.

How do I encrypt it. It has an encryption key. Doesn't that mean that it's encrypted?

well in hawaii if people dont like thier neighbors they just get a noisy dog....
every time you log onto the network do you have to put a password in? Is the password the generic default password that linksys gives yoU?
If it is, change the password to something crazy and write it down next to your computer.

Solo is right. You need to password protect it and write the password down. For the password, I would make it at least 8 characters and contain an upper case, lower case, number and special character. That would make it very unlikely that someone would be able to guess it (as long as you do not use your birthday, or address). Where I work, our passwords have to be 15 characters and contain 2 upper case, 2 lower case, 2 numbers, 2 special characters, letters cannot form a word contained in the dictionary and cannot be part of your name.

If you put Wireless Security on your Linksys - the other machine will become disconnected IMMEDIATELY.
From that point, they can't get an IP address and can't connect to your Router even if they know your Admin password (unless you've enabled remote administration and they hit your legitimate Cablemodem IP)... There's really no reason you shouldn't enable WEP.. and once you do that you need to configure your other wireless devices to use the WEP "Key" (an auto-generated password of sorts) which will allow it to communicate on your wireless network. It's really quite simple and straightforward, but you'll want to do these changes from a machine that is connected via Ethernet to the Router... =) --Akkim |

You're Linksys should have a connect utility program that can be accessed from the second PC. I have this set-up on my wife's PC on the other side of the house. I have a Buffalo Air Station receiver on her end.
You'll need to write down the encryption code, whatever that may be, and then input that code into the appropriate key box at your other PC to allow access. Once you've done that, you will not have to do it again unless you want to reboot your router or change your code. The utility that I use is called Linksys Easy Link Advisor... Google it. Download this utility and it will guide you through setup. Edited by EdH63 - 04 Jan 2008 at 3:00pm |

Go with a security enabled network as everyone else here says. Even though I do not keep any sensitive info on my computer that anyone could hijack, I do use it to do on line banking. Also, I surely do not want anyone stealing any of my bandwith while on line gaming! My network password is something crazy like 21 letters and numbers.

I have a wireless N box too that I just bought a few weeks ago. I have NEVER had any trouble with it. I know that is not a help, Its just my experience. Are you sure that your cable modem is good? Is your internet going in and out by your provider?
