Do you want to know the physical differences in their architecture or just their performance. Generally Nvidia has out performed ATI for a few years now, same thing with Intel out performing AMD, and during that time ATI/AMD have become known as budget options.

The top level ATI cards do perform well but if the new 7970 is any indication ATI will play second fiddle yet again. Their "new" generation card only beats Nvidia's current generation 580 by less then 10fps in most tests yet the 7970 they tested has double the VRAM then the 580 used in the same test.

Nvidia's soon to be released 600 series cards should top that easy

Not much really, nvidia tends to be the king in performance or performance vs price depending on your needs.

if you want to do multi display ati can do it eaiser and better, if you want to do 3D nvidia does that better.

what you want to look at is what games you play, if they use cf/sli correctly, what res you play at and if that res needs cf/sli.'

once you know all of that then you look for which one gives you best power for best price.
