After having multiple 670's go bad on me, I have switched to 7970's in crossfire. I am playing Alan Wake in 3d and because I am afraid of heat damage, I quit playing when the gpu temp goes to 70C. Am I being overly cautious. The computer is out in the open and space exists behind the computer. I'm beginning to think one needs a mini air conditioner inside the case.

Nothing wrong with your temps at 70 c.     Anything below low 80's is fine.   If you want you can download msi Afterburner or EVGA Precision and setup a more aggressive fan profile.   Instead of for example 60% fan at 70c you can set the graph for 70% at 70c, but more noise.    Manufacturers keep fan speeds on the low side to reduce fan noise.

One of the nice things about EVGA Precision on the Titan is that it is set for an optimum of 80 Degrees C. It will maintain that temp adjust clocking and fan speed to insure that it does not go over your preset temp. It allows you to set a temp that is appropriate for your GPU and maintain it. I do not know what GPU cards that EVGA precision supports but it is a really nice tool for Titans.
