I've found that while utilising the catalyst control center doesn't provide direct control of fan speed for the HD 4850 and HD 4870, you can manually adjust the default setting thru the profile ini. However, if you use ATI Tray Tools at http://www.guru3d.com, you can adjust the fan setting at 8 different temp steps. You can still run your CCC overclock and manual fan setting, while the tray tools will override the fan speed when the gpu heats up.
While my graphics card fan runs louder during gaming than it used to, the temps now stay below 80*C at peak, while it used to come closer to 89*C peak. P.S. Sorry, one thing I forgot about. The earlier high temp of 89*C peak was with a pci slot fan running 50% right above the exhaust of the card. With the current graphics fan controls, I have been running the pci fan below 25% speed. I may stop using the pci slot fan, but then the mobo will run a bit hotter. Edited by widdlecat - 14 Sep 2008 at 2:55am |

Jesus, thats WAY to hot for my tastes...I don't like it when my card gets above 60c, let alone 89c...
I'd be pulling my hair out. I enjoy the fan noise on my computer (I'm weird) it's soothing to me and it lets me know that everything is working like it should. |

ATI says the HD4850 can safely operate at something over 105*C. I forget just how high now. Damage occurs at 125*C. Currently I operate between 70* and 79* during gaming normally. Noise really bugs me so I'm probably a prime candidate for liquid cooling... LOL!
