Topic: Graphics Card ? on Vanquish 5 Posted: 13 Aug 2016 at 11:41am |
I think I'm finally going to pull the trigger on a new DS machine in a couple months. But would like to try and save a little money, so I'm debating which graphics card to go with. I have a BenQ GL2460 monitor, 1920 x 1080 and I primarily only use the computer for surfing the internet and MMO's (only SWTOR at the moment).
I'm wondering what the cost vs performance is between the 1070, 1060 and the GTX 980 that are available options on the Vanquish? Here's my current configuration w/ the 1070: Digital Storm Desktop - Config ID 1470054 $1,740.00 System Configuration:Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Digital Storm VANQUISH 5 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i5 6500 3.2GHz (Codename Skylake) (Quad Core) (Not Overclockable) Motherboard: ASUS/GIGABYTE (Intel Z170 Chipset) System Memory: 16GB DDR4 2666MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series Power Supply: 750W EVGA/Corsair Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: Blu-Ray & DVD Writer/Reader (Burn + Play Blu-Ray & DVDs) (12x BD-R) (Internal) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD (500GB Samsung 850 EVO) Storage Set 2: 1x Storage (1TB Western Digital - Black Edition) Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce GTX 1070 8GB (ASUS Turbo) (VR Ready) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio HPC Processor: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: High Performance Cooler with Large Fan and Copper Pipes HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow) Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Remote Controlled LED Lighting System (Multiple color options and lighting effects) Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks CPU Boost: Standard Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Automatic Overclocking Graphics Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) OS Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows CD) Virus Protection: FREE: McAfee AntiVirus Plus (1 Year Service Activation Card) (Not Pre-installed) ($35 Value) Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) |

If you're looking to stick to a low budget, GTX 1060 will be 1080 60 FPS in anything out right now but will start dipping below that in intense games that are yet to come out, but will handle high no problem just not ultra. If you don't want to worry about it and want to last a while longer, 1070. IMO no other cards are worth your consideration.

980 is a few fps lower then the 1060 and the 1070 puts a good distance between it and the 1060.

for 1080p:
GTX 1060 = for the budget conscious/more than capable of handling most games on high-ultra settings GTX 1070 = destroys all games at this resolution and capable of jumping up to 1440p should you ever decide to. it is 35-45% faster than GTX 1060 for a 50% price increase. GTX 1080 = complete overkill/possibly brings cpu bottlenecks into the equation/not worth the investment at this resolution. 65% increase in performance over GTX 1060 at 250% price increase. 20-25% faster than GTX 1070 for 50% price increase. right now, most of these cards are selling far above their msrp, so the ratios can vary. |

as for the comparison to the GTX 980, the GTX 1060 is essentially the same performance. it is of a class with the GTX 980 and the AMD RX480. you can find GTX 980's selling (from various vendors) from the high $300's to $600 (crazy i know).
both the 1060 and RX480 are having stocking issues as well as price hiking (you're lucky to find one under $300). for some reason, DS is selling the 980 for a higher price than the 1060, so i'd definitely choose the 1060 over it. Edited by db188 - 13 Aug 2016 at 2:47pm |

MMOs are more cpu based IMHO a good cpu and 980 will give you more then you need in MMO but as mentioned right now for the price being lower go with the 1060, its cheaper here and its a newer card so it makes it an obvious choice.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I'll go with the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB (ASUS ROG STRIX)... that will cut about $260 off the total, which will help a lot.
