Topic: Graphics card question Posted: 29 Oct 2015 at 4:14pm |
Hello there! Just a quick question, my current gpu is a AMD Radeon HD 7770 1GB and I wanted to upgrade to EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2 GB. Now the reason I am upgrading is because the current gpu is causing my system not to start. The reason I know this is because when I unplug the PCIe cord and power my system on it powers up. If the gpu is connected my computer will power on for 1/2 a second and then stop. I'm simply wondering if I purchase this new gpu, will my system then be able to power on fine?
Some other information is I thought this problem was originally my psu so I purchased a new one and replaced it, but to no avail. My current psu is now a corsair cx600. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and answer this! |

The gtx 960 will work as a replacement, using the same Pcie slot. Whether this fixes the problem I couldn't say. It does sound like a bad video card but there's a remote possibility it's the motherboard itself. My guess is a bad hd7770.

So I suppose my only option would be to purchase the new gtx 960 and seeing if it works, considering I have no other graphics card to test on this system?

Or if you can try the hd7770 in a different computer. Otherwise, yeah, replacing it is the only way to know.
Good luck. |

Hi KGEliminator,
You could take your computer down to a repair shop. They should have a spare GPU that they could plug in and test your system. I would call first and tell them what you got. Ask what they charge. Frank |

I tried removing and then putting the card back in, but still the same powering problem occurred. How annoying :P

It should probably also be stated that before all of this happened, I was getting warnings from my AI Suite that my 3.3V and my VDDA voltage was low, and my computer would the. Shortly after that restart automatically. I would unplug the main power to the motherboard and to the graphics card, wait a few minutes, plug them back in, and then the warnings would go away and the computer would boot fine for a month or two before it started again with the warnings. This was happening for about 8 months up until now. I just assumed it was the psu, but it could have been the gpu the whole time? I dunno, sorry about information overload :D

No problem with the questions. A bad card could drop the voltages. A bad psu wasn't a bad guess. Just for kicks, try reseating the ram sticks and the 4/6 pin cpu cable from psu to the Mobo, usually just above the cpu. . Check the connections to the drives, both the power and Sata both ends. The 3.3 is a logic voltage and it doesn't take much to drop it below specs.

i would also try putting that gpu in a different pcie x16 slot and see if that fixes the issue. as to the warnings, i get them all of the time and when i check them against the third party monitoring info i get completely different readings. i've seen some pretty silly warnings like sub zero temps, crazy vcore, etc. and when i check two other monitoring programs vcore is fine and temps are all in acceptable range. i use HWMonitor and CPUZ/GPU, AMD Catalyst Control Center, etc.
