ATI does the crossfire but what does Nvidia do? Saw the review in PC Gamer. Great job. Edited by MikeMaravani - 02 Mar 2009 at 1:21pm |

Oh and Alex, I dont know if you have seen this but here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqVM1sq7aeM&feature=related
Its one of your customers, doing a total review. Its kind of boring but its refreshing to see someone that likes his new rig.

Right now you are good with either depending on what is your budget and what kind of performance you are looking for.

I was going for the 4870. but its going to be a totally custom build. This is what I have so far:
Processor - I want to overclock, and have a 4 core processor (prefer a Q9). No i7
Graphics Card - I did like Nvidia, but the Radon 4870 HD has caught my eye. Motherboard - EVGA eForce 790i Ultra SLI or MSI P45 Platinum Ram - 6Gb (but dont know who to go with) Case - Antec 1200, CoolerMaster HAF, or the Raven Power Supply - 750w or 850w (silent edition) OS - Vista 64 bit Hard Drive - 2 Western Digital 500Gb in a raid 0 mirror configuration & External HD for games Optical Drive - Dont Care as long as its quite Sound Card - None Cooling - Zaleman CNPS9300 AT with upgraded case fans, and custom 120mm fan on the side. Led Lights.
I dont like the liquid cooling. Too expensive and its a big hassle. |

instead of doing a crossfire of the 4870, just get a 4870X2

If you want some longevity and overall better cpu performance it would be smart to go with an I7 920.. Its actually cheaper then most of the quad cores.. Article about the price of I7 vs quad

I agree with DSnewb. I personally wouldn't buy an old Core 2 Quad chip now that Intel has moved forward. The socket 775 is dead and on its way out. The next 4+ years belong to the socket 1366. Where Intel goes, the industry follows. Sure, you can still buy 775 stuff now, but for how long? The ability to make your computer last for 5+ years with a CPU upgrade in a few years just disappears if you marry yourself to a 775 system at this point. Besides, the 920 overclocks insanely well. You get a LOT more for your money.

Well $$ is in factor here. I dont have enough for the 4870x2 and the I7 is still fairly new.
But if I get the I7 then what motherboard should i get? (I might get a 2nd Graphics card)
and will everything else fall into place?

I'd go with an evga x58, very reasonable board priced very well for the amount of features you have acess to. |

I was just thinking that you wanted to go with 2 x 4870, thats why I suggested the 4870X2 because a single 4870X2 would be a lot less hassle than 2 x 4870s

Lifetime warranty for 30 bucks? Wow, nice deal! Which board is DS using now?
Hey, on a side issue - has anyone heard when 4GB sticks are coming for 1366 systems? At some point down the road, I want to swap out my 12GB of sticks to get 24GB of RAM. I'm sure I'll need to flash the BIOS, too. HD video editing eats RAM like crazy - freakin' huge files... |

Yeah, I just don't understand Microsoft putting in an arbitrary limit like that when it is a 64 bit operating system. Then again, I don't understand a LOT of things Microsoft does - like creating a decent OS and then crippling it by various amounts so that they can sell 6 different versions of it.
It's funny that we think 128 GB is a lot of memory now, but it wasn't really that long ago we were using PCs that only supported 640 KB of RAM on the motherboard. Hell, my first computer only had 16K of RAM, which I hacked to hold 128KB eventually. Now most PCs come with 3 or 4 GB. Heck, my iPhone has almost 1000 times more storage than my first hard drive had. Actually, there are expensive server and workstation motherboards that come close to the memory limitations of Ultimate 64 already. I'm guessing it will be about 4 years before we see consumer desktop machines that are expandable to 128 GB of RAM. By then, we'll probably be seeing memristor based technology starting to appear from manufacturers which will blow past any capacity we're seeing now. |

Back in 1979, I was running Teletype with a model 19, chadless tape, and a 6 ft modem rack. I was using it over ham radio and having a ball. The modem had a mino O Scope to tweak mark and space. Edited by Onkel_Ken - 06 Mar 2009 at 12:19pm |

I still have my first PCs also, I was a kid in the heydey of the personal computer revolution. I started out with the Commodore Pet 16 a business computer my father bought for a small fortune at the time for his business. I started playing with it and after my third or fourth oops I broke something incident my father bought me my own computer the Vic-20 which he got for a deal because he spent alot with Commodore in those days, mostly direct order as there were no real computer stores near us.
Then I went through the gamut from the Apple II and TRS-80, the TI-994a. Once the Amiga came out I was an avid Commodore fanatic again, and then when it died, I joind the PC crowd as the mac simply did not have the software support I was looking for... Ah... the days of old when 110 baud was considered pretty darn good.... a modem that could send text as fast as a good typist... will wonders never cease. Dave ![]() |
