I'm getting a new rig soon, so instead of spending tons of money on a 480, does DS watercool 460s?

they can, but those cards can get really hot, you might not find it worth it, plus watercooling is expensive as it is
you'll probs be spending the same if u get 480 with air

I don't know my price limit yet, but i was going to shoot for two 480's
but why spend so much money on something that's going to go outdated in two months? When I can spend less money on two 460's |

That's a pretty odd outlook. You'd be more outdated buying 460's now than you would be buying a 480. A 480 would last you quite some time, and upgrading to a better single GPU is almost always the better choice than buying two already outdated cards. Having them go useless within the same time your single card would is a bigger waste of money, especially if you take on WCing them.

My point exactly, i'll be spending less money on cards that are "already outdated" instead of spending 800$ for two 480's which I was going to do, until I saw that. I realize a single 480 is decent and dx11, but in the end they have the same specs as a gtx275, which I have already. Plus is dx11, which i don't play any games that require it..

You don't need two 480s. Buy a 480 on air, when it gets out dated, buy a new GPU. You'll have less hassle dealing with air cooling when you upgrade and it'll be cheaper.

True! I wish they offered different cases/: i've built a couple with the obsidian, and it's just a pain to work with

You can buy a case that's not listed and they'll use it. You just have to pay shipping.

i ordered a double 9600 GT rig when i SHOULD have bought 2 series. Horrible mistake. Now I'm 2 years behind not running later DX10 games as well as I'd want to. Meh.

well....ATI 6 series is coming out next month/november......ehehe......so technically, you would be outdated within a few months. lol. which is why I'm actually postponing my GPU upgrade for now.

with anything in the technology world your hardware will be outdated in NO TIME after you buy, it doesnt matter when you buy it or how much you spend, something better will be out soon
worse still, is that most very cutting edge release buyers end up getting screwed hard becuase prices are super high and as with any technology there are glitches and bugs to work out before they are really ready to be sold

i know that, but my logic is that well, you're gonna be outdated in a year or two. but when you're on the actual brink of next-gen hardware like ATI/AMD is now, might as well wait a tiny bit.
the AMD series always follows a pattern, Y5X0 is low end, Y6X0 is mainstream, Y7X0 is gaming, Y8X0 is gaming computer enthusiast level. Y is the series number, while X is either 5 or 7 (5 denotes the lower end of that model, 7 for higher end of that model) sometimes it gets lower than Y5X0, usually even lower end. Special cards denoted with a X2 or a Y970 model are usually dual card models. Usually, AMD will release a dual-GPU card along with the single-gpu ones ,and yes, there supposedly is a 6970 slated for release. Edited by ablahblah - 23 Sep 2010 at 10:52pm |

ATI, AMD 6000 series will be that, a whole series of cards, there will be at least one dual card, and many single cards.
