Btw for HiJackThis, on your site (I presume they're up to date) you have two versions, which should be dled for what?
Dad's laptop went bonkers, and I was able to write down numbers from a BSOD (gonna make a topic on that later I suppose) |

some are use to the original and thats the Merjin version 1.9, it does not support vista tho.
then trend bought it from Merjin, and it went to 2.0 which vista compatible so most should do 2.0 @skyr, you can lead the hijackthis link to my site, it has both versions and we host it ourselves so we know its not been messed with or contaminated. How bad is the McAfee I use? Even though I have a subscription should I just uninstall it and use one of the ones you listed? Or just wait till my sub ends then get rid of it. I mean if it sucks really bad I guess be honest with me because I wont think twice about tossing it.

PG1 its bad, it has lot of processes you dn't need and is eating your system memory for no reason. its slows down your boot, its slow scanning. anybody that thinks you should use mcafee cause you won't notice a difference due to your system specs, obviously is not very educated in how these things work, and in what way they effect your system. Your specs have nothing to do with how fast mcafee scans or starts at boot time, or any complications it can cause. but if you have a paid subscription, I can't ask you to drop it, thats upto you. I can tell you that I never use the mcafee or norton suscription that comes with the pcs. Edited by DST4ME - 22 Oct 2008 at 9:45pm |

To All, Found this link to a fairly nice collection of the latest reviews from PC Magazine for the newest Security Suites.
Might offer people some insight if they are looking for a good software package. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2333448,00.asp Dave ![]() Edited by Kliebor2 - 01 Dec 2008 at 1:19pm |

Yeah it's funny I use the same jtspectra2. No viruses and very little spyware/adware etc.
I would of thought Vista's firewall would be quite weak and I would of been attacked often requiring me to upgrade to some new software but so far (1.5 years) nothing. |

The issue with Vista's firewall is not preventing inbound attacks, it does that fine.
the issue is that outbound program control is lacking.
Thus if you have any less skilled users, like kids on your PC they can get into trouble by downloading programs that silently send information to an external source with no alert to the system admin user.
A good firewall, as in Zone Alarm, Norton Internet Security or Kaspersky will prevent internet sends as well as potential attacks until the activity is approved by an administrator user ID, something that Vista's firewall will not do.

excellent for chewing your ram and windows startup
![]() as far as PC mag rating goes, I could careless about them, their bad rating is based on the fact that it can't detect spyware well. well I got news for you, no security suite detects spyware as well as say spysweeper. when it comes to speed, anti virus abilities, eset is king. instead of dumb editors, see what users have to say about eset (nod32) vs norton mcafee and norton/symantec are jokes. nod compared to mcafee and norton/symantec is like hireing 2 companies to fix your house. one does it very fast and effective with 2 people. the other takes much longer while using 8 to 12 people and it gets in your way and slows your down. Well DST, perhaps it would help if you tested software before you put foot in mouth.
NIS 2009, which I have used since reading 4 very positive reviews in 4 seperate sources is one of the leanest security packages around.
It uses 10 Megs, yes megs of memory sitting still, in other words, tiny memory footprint. During idle scans, which you guessed it only occur if the PC is idle, it jumps by about 150% to 25 megs, still tiny.
My boot times unsecured were 40 seconds, 53 seconds after install also excellent.
The firewall is rated at one of the best by every reputable security rating company on the net. The anti-virus is super fast especially with Norton Insight active which essentially scans static windows files only if the file changes, using checksum signatures to verify windows dlls and such are actually what they say they are, then it ignores them. A/V scans run about 5 minutes at a pop when my PC is idle for at least 30 minutes and stop immediately if I start work. On demand scans are also active. The protection offered has gotten VB 100% award every year since 1999. A stat that no other package can match, not even ESET which has failed twice in that time and has the second best record after Norton. Eset failed in (2000 and 2002) so in essence both have excellent Anti-virus.
I do not know the install footprint on Eset, but I do know that Norton has improved at least 100 fold since the heydey of bigger is better virus protection to a much leaner and very very fast utility that it NIS 2009, this coming from a person who used Norton Anti-Virus in the late Nineties and was rather disgusted at the time by the slowdowns it created, so I have no love for Symantec it is true, but after 10 years I was willing to give it a try based on many excellent reviews not only from reviewers like PC Magazine, but also hundreds of positive reviews on the likes of Tom's Hardware Forums, Amazon.com, newegg.com, howtogeek.com forums as well as the Virus Bulletin reviews, West Coast labs and ICSA which all rated NIS 2009 as passing with flying colors all their tests.
According A/V Comparitives a site that rates and compares A/V Protection eSet only earned Advanced while Norton A/V earned Advanced + certification. See the attached link to their report September of 2008.
From all I have read eSet is a good a/v utility, it is just not as good as the latest crop from Norton in my opinion, especially considering your points about how Norton is a computer hog and uses alot of resources are meritless both from my own testing and everyone elses on the web regarding system foot print, scan speed and boot up time change where Norton is at the top in every review I have seen.

By The By, Never heard of SofoTex, but most of the reviews and posts on the site are more than 2 years old, in your link... but from this same site just to show that both sides are liked, take a look at this.
Showing that the reviews for Norton AntiVirus are virtually all 5 stars... excellent.

2 Tasks. One using 5.8 meg one using 3.7 Meg right now.
The tasks have a total of about 100 threads according to Process Explorer 64 Using 0% of CPU.
The total CPU Time for 3 days up and online is:
4 Minutes and 58 Seconds.
So Not bad.

I use McAfee Personal Firewall since I get it for free since I'm a Comcast internet subscriber. However, I won't use their AV because it's slow and can be a resource hog. I use AVG free for AV.
I was wondering though if anyone knows of some better firewalls that are effective and not resource hogs. |
