Among other things we have confirmed today are 480 SPs, 289W TDP, Quad SLI support. Clock speeds, performance and price still remains a mystery but we will soon find out
VR-ZONE

NVIDIA is preparing the GeForce GTX 295 and GTX 285 cards for launch on January 8th at CES 2009. According to the official data VR-Zone has seen, GeForce GTX 295 card has dual 55nm GT200 GPUs and 1792MB GDDR3 memories on 896-bit memory interface. The rest of the specs like number of shader processors and clocks speeds are listed as TBA. As for GeForce GTX 285, it is a replacement for the current GeForce GTX 280 card with a 55nm GT200 GPU with higher clocks. Therefore, GeForce GTX 280 cards will reach EOL in a month time. As for GeForce GTX 260, Nvidia has released design kits to the card makers and you should be seeing some self-designed cards in Q1 next year.

Yeah your right. they need to release a gtx280 with hdmi
Heres what I found on nvidia
Example: You can use a GeForce 7800 GTX from manufacturer ABC with a GeForce 7800 GTX from manufacturer XYZ.
Note: You must still use two graphics cards that have the same GPU. For example, a GeForce 7800 GT must be matched with another GeForce 7800 GT (not with a GeForce 7800 GTX or a GeForce 6800 Ultra). Mix and Match Graphics Cards with Different Input/Output Ports
Example: You can use a GeForce 6800 GT with Dual DVI & TV-out with a GeForce 6800 GT with Dual DVI & VIVO.

Mix and Match Graphics Cards with Different Clock Speeds
Example: You can use a higher clocked GeForce 6600 GT 550/525 with a standard clock GeForce 6600 GT 500/500.

Mix and Match Graphics Cards with Different Memory Sizes
Example: Using Coolbits, you can use a 128MB GeForce 6800 GT with a 256MB GeForce 6800 GT.

Note: NVIDIA recommends that SLI customers, whenever possible, purchase graphics cards with matching memory sizes. When dissimilar memory sizes are enabled to work together using Coolbits (value set to 18), the effective memory size for each card becomes the smaller of the two memory sizes.

Hi

Any idea as to the pricing and the effect on single gtx260s?  A month from now may be a good time to snag a gtx 260.

Wow I'm really disappointed in nVidia. I was hoping for a true dual-GPU card but instead they decided to take two 260's slap them together and call it new. I doubt it's performance will be anything to get excited about either.

This is too bad for people waiting on the 4870 X2 killer.

Anyway I still have hopes for the 295.

Why would it matter 2 or 1 PCB's?  If it doesn't affect perf why does it matter to the end customer?  Its a design issue that doesn't impact the end customer in anyway.

The 260/280 can do HDMI. You have to use the hdmi to dvi converter. Then use the pass through cable that plugs into the the videocard then to  spdif port on the motherboard.

Not a whole lot to be honest with you because the prices for the 260 and 280 are already very competitive comparing to last years standards.

Prove it.  I haven't seen it yet.  I'm not being a fan boy but some proof would be nice if you're talking to customers.

The 295 will have the same amount of memory as the 280 I believe and the 285 will have 1792mb of ram.

I can see the 295 running into ram issues like the 98GX2 did. Cut that number in half and you get the true ram...896.

Might be slightly alright for games today, but a year from now? hell no. Heck GTA4 sucks up video ram like no tomorrow. Since SLI doesnt work (GG Rockstar), i cant even use high settings. I can use high, and set the visability to like 40, but the game will just crash due to lack of Vram within 10-15 minutes. This is with 1GB, i cant imagine how itd be any better with 896mb.

Here is a preliminary review of the 295:

Review

Make sure you read the introduction. The numbers might be skewed a little in Nvidia's favor, because of the limits placed on the review. However, it looks quite promising. Maybe Nvidia will take the crown back with this new card. I can't wait to watch the battle unfold.

Edit: I just realized this is already being discussed in another thread here

I read that article, and its good to see they are voicing my concerns as well. I can see this card being choaked by memory bandwidth issues. Just like the GX2. And that they are gimping the memory on purpose so producers can gouge people on the "superclocked" versions. Which sure as hell wont be at the base price. Hell a FTW editon 280 still goes for just above 500.

So in all reguards, id say if you have 1 GTX 280, just buy another one now or wait to see what the 285 is. Or if you have 2 GTX 280s or more like me...screw it, these arnt worth your time.

Hi Alex

Not sure if I agree with you.  From what I've read so far, I get the feeling that two gtx 280s in sli, will just slightly beat out the gtx 295.  If that is so, the comparison will have to dictate the gtx 280 pricing.  If one gtx 280 is not that much less in price or two are significantly more in price than the gtx 295, there will not be many of them sold.  The gtx 295 will force the price of the other gtx 200 series cards down.  In a month or two the gtx 280 will not be competing against last year's standard but next year's.
