Been thinking about upgrading my graphics (finally) so I'll be able to support DX11. main reason is that I might be getting a laptop that supports DX11 soon, doesn't make sense to have a laptop with a hardware advantage over my desktop, ehehe. Since I still wanna stick to nVidia, specifically for PhysX, that leaves me with the option of a GTX 470 or a GTX 480... What exactly is the amount of power the 480 has over the 470? haven't gotten any solid answers yet, and considering that the price differential for the two is $150 and I'm trying to not spend that much on computer hardware, I need to knoww whether a GTX 480 is really worth it or not. What do you think? Is $150 worth it to get a GTX 480 over a GTX 470? Or, should I just make the jump to ATI, considering that the main advantages of nVidia are just PhysX, 3D Vision, and tessellation?

Oh and another thing, does a GTX 480 produce any ambient heat around it? Considering that I have a few lower-end expansion cards sandwiched around the primary slot, that might pose a problem, I dunno. My case is a Raven 1 by the way.

Do you want to max games at 1920x1200? If so then yes the 480 is worth it. If you are fine with running things at lower resolutions or with lowered settings then a 470 or 5870 will work.

PhysX and 3D Vision are marketing ploys, they are mostly a non-issue. The only big difference between Nvidia and ATI at any given time are their drivers. The 480 is also currently a better choice for higher resolutions over ATI solutions because of the higher horse power and being able to max more games at said resolutions without a significant price increase, but this can change as the two companies release new cards and lower prices.

Not at all. Like most video cards it shunts all the warm air completely out of the case.

you know you could buy a 5870 and use one of your 9600's for a dedicated PhysX card right?

...wha? nVidia drivers are designed now so that can't happen, if it sees a ATI card anywhere when a nVidia card is present, it just shuts down...Lucid Hydra I know tries to do that, but it didn't get it quite right

oh and by maxing settings, you mean with AA on or off? I'm running 1920x1080, maxing settings actually I could care less about, I just wanna play the dang game so 470 then?

don't got the money, well I do technically, but I want to avoid spending as much as possible. anyways, dual 9600s served me well for a year, I'm sure a 470 can last me longer, heh.

If you don't plan on using heavy amounts of AA, then you can save some money and get the 470. At 1920x1200, I personally don't see the need for high AA at the higher resolutions. Some people do though, it depends on what settings your comfortable with.

I don't think even a single 480 would max out every game at 1920x1200, honestly. There will be a few titles where you will need SLI 480s to accomplish that.

So how hardcore are you with image settings? How many frames do you prefer? Depending on that, decide on the 470, 480, or SLI 480.

Might want to check-out Anandtech and HardwareCanucks, see if any games you play are on their benchmarks, to give you a better idea.

+60fps preferred, I can play at ~40fps if I'm really really really desperate.

image settings I really dun care much about, it's the game itself that matters to me. often I'll just mess with image settings just so i can achieve the 60fps range.

does this not work? I don't really keep up with all that PhysX stuff, it just seems like useless fluff to me.

it's one of the only ways it'll work, hacking/modding a driver, or rolling back way way way back until you get to the one's that already have a bug in them. outdated driver will never update, obviously, and you'd have to keep modding drivers. too much work.

Well, if your looking for 60fps, at your resolution, I would just grab a 480. A single 480 will pretty much ensure you buttery smooth gameplay at your resolution. And give you great image quality settings along with it.

I recently picked up a 470 for myself, but I game at 1680x1050, and I average roughly 60fps across the games I play with the 470. At your resolution though, I would go for the 480.

Yeah but for the rest of us who can't afford exotic cooling, overclocking a gpu which sits @ 90 degrees celcius during load is not the best idea.

Honestly unless you have the hardware already, investing in liquid cooling or an aftermarket cooler in order to overclock a 470 to match the fps of the 480 gpu is self defeating, since you'll end up spending way more $$$ than if you had just bought the 480 to begin with.

yeah, that stock air cooling is soo much more expensive than stock air cooling, thousands more for stock air cooling over the cheap stock air cooling. just crazy expensive.

you are the one making BS claims, so what else do you expect?
The GTX 470 especially with the new High flow bracket, runs pretty cool, when you modify the fan profile, even just a mild overclock to match the GTX 480 speeds, and it will still not get over 85C.. only when pushed  hard will it get really hot. 100C+
