GTX Failure?

   Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I've posted on these forums.  My rig is now a few years old and I think I'm running into a problem with my one of my two GTX9800's.

When I first got my rig there was something loose in the case.  I opened it up and there was a small silver capacitor rolling around on the bottom of the case.  For the life of me I couldn't figure out where it came from and I couldn't find a similar one any where in the machine.  In my excitement I tried starting my machine and everything worked fine.

I know I should of probably shipped it back but the combination of the agonizing wait which we've all experienced and the fact that everything was working fine got the better of me.

My system now hard locks random but only when I'm watching a video or playing games.  the best way to describe some of the problems I see would be screen tearing.  I can go a week without it locking but it's frustrating when it happens.  I can post some event viewer logs and overall system specs when I get home but I was wondering if maybe I should just try removing one of the cards and see if that does the trick?

	I definitely sounds like a GPU failure.My old 9800GT used to do the exact same thing, it would be fine most of the time but my system would have a seizure when playing games some times and it required a full restart to fix. My system would lock up for several minutes then when it would come back my colors would be all messed up and the screen would "tear" like you said. Depending on how old the system is it could just be it's gone bad from old age. My 9800GT was a super-clocked version so I am not surprised it died on me after about two years of heavy use. You card being a 9800GTX is slightly different but if I remember by Nividia info correctly they are all still part of the same processor family. Mine was just a single slot budget version.

	Yeah try to find out if it's just one card that has an issue and don't use it for now. In terms of upgrading you are almost at that point where you may want to consider a new build. To get the most out of a multi-core CPU you really should get Win7 64-bit but that would require a RAM upgrade as well. Since your MOBO only takes DDR2 we are back to that point where you may want to consider a new system build. And if you are going to upgrade to Win7 you may as well upgrade to a SSD for your main drive. If you want to keep what you have and maybe just go with a GPU upgrade for now we would need to know what resolution you play at and what PSU you have to make a valid recommendation. We need to know how much graphics power you need and how much actual power you have available to support it. You can pick up a 560 Ti for a good price. DST4ME could probably answer this for certain but going with something like a 570 or 580 may get bottle necked by either your CPU or your RAM.
