Well as my first post here on the DS forums I'd like to see if I could get some advice on a desktop I plan to purchase here soon. I also have a few questions, of which I'll post under the specs. Thanks in advance to those that reply.

I play a lot of Counter Strike Source and nearly every person I have ever played with or against has recommended the 8800 Ultra or the 9800GTX. It's gotten good reviews and is loved by many so I thought I'd go with that. The PSU I wasn't really sure about. I am not looking to add another card in the future so if I don't need the extra power I'll lower it down. As for the price, I'd really like to hit around $2500 but with my tastes it doesnt quite look that way. What I'm looking for is a PC that will play most games with max settings, will be able to run Photoshop, Illustrator, and Fireworks at the same time and could multi task like no other. If I can get that at a much cheaper price then by all means I'll go with that. I just want something thats going to kick ass and won't nee dot be upgraded anytime soon (except for the hdd). Thank you for your reply, it's shown a little more light on things. |

your dual core can't do the multi taksing you like, a quad would do a much better job.
if you want games and multi taksing then you want: quad core 4GB of ram to lower the price we will need to take the cooling from liquid to stage 2. this will hit your oc speeds. here you go Ticket# 198389 --- Price: $2509 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 860W PC Power & Cooling (ESA Edition) (Dual SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: nVidia 790i Ultra Core 2 Quad (nForce 790i Ultra SLI) (DDR3 Only) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1333MHz OCZ Card Reader: Internal Digital Media Card Reader (Black) Hard Drive 1: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive 2: - No Thanks Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800ULTRA 768MB (Includes PhysX Technology) (CLEARANCE PRICED) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink Upgrade (Copper Heatpipes) Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Red Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: NVIDIA Enthusiast System Architecture (ESA) System (Install, Test, Optimize Computer) Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: 3D Mark Vantage Advanced Edition (By: Futuremark) (Pre-Install) (Vista Compatible Only) Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty you want to keep the price low? drop things like esa |

I considered the quad core, but I've read a lot of "versus" reviews comparing Dual Core to Quad Core and nearly all said the dual core was "at the moment" better because most programs can't utilize four cores and the dual cores showed a considerable performance increase over the quad core's. I have also heard very high praise for the dual core that I'm looking at. This is what I am operating on now. Hp pavilion dv5000 ATI Radeon Xpress 200m 1gig 800 ram It is horrible but I was ignorant to computer tech when I bought it. not to mention, my hdd has a trillion bad sectors and is literally hours away from dying, hahaha. So anything that is better then that current set up will bring a smile to my face. Thanks for your help. EDIT: I will also need a display as how I do not have one already. So there goes another $300+ off the top, haha. Edited by Phantom - 23 Oct 2008 at 3:32pm |

going with a 2 gen old video bc of one out dated game seems pretty meh imo. I would ditch it for a newer card bc it will get out performed in any other game your gonna play. As far as that goes i agree with what everyone else said in the thread(more ram, less psu)

I guess you missed my above post, who ever told you that in multi taksing dual is the same as quad was an idiot. I think you have an old ticket cause the gtx 280 is showing cheaper then the 8800. Edited by DST4ME - 23 Oct 2008 at 3:56pm |

I don't believe they were meaning that it was the same as far as multi tasking but as far as single programs it destroyed the quad core on all but two programs I believe. My latop running with a 1.8 single core AMD turion can run photoshop and Fireworks side by side at ease. I just think quad core is over doing it for my needs. also, would 2 gigs of 1800mhz be better then 4 gigs of 800mhz? |

well I do losts of multi tasking, I have dual core and I have quad cores, the dual cores can't do what quad cores can do in multi tasking.
but you get what ever you like, but make no mistake a quad core can handle lots more load then a dual core. ram speed = speed ram size = more multi taksing. your 2GB of 1800MHz ram is over kill. 4GB of 1333 to match your fsb or 4GB 1066 will do just fine. |

I may end up going with the 4 gigs just cause I already have Vista ultimate and I could dual boot XP with it. I'd like to do multi tasking but noting major like watching a movie, surfing the web, photoshop and CSS. I only need something that could run single and even two programs at blazing speeds. Thanks again for yours and everyone elses input. It's highly appreciated. |

Thanks!
I must say, I'm completely blown away with not only the support and quality here but also the look of the place. I'm one of those people who loves how something looks just as much as how it functions so I'm highly impressed. No other site can top DS as far as looks and from what I have heard and read, no one can top their quality or support either. |

LOL, look like we are similar in that way, I too pay attention to looks and can appreciate the work that goes into a site
I think we all ended up here first because of customer service that Alex and his staff provides. then we were blown away by how good their PCs are |

I'll be looking at getting my new rig within the next month or so. As soon as I do, I'll post an in depth review, with pics, possibly video, Benchmark results, etc.
I'm about to put a bullet hole in my laptop so it may even be sooner, haha. |
