Last month I bought a DS Hailstorm.

Problem:

I'm trying to plug in the 2.5" SSD from my old Alienware laptop using hot swap, but the system doesn't recognize that anything's happening. It's not showing up in Windows Explorer or the Intel Rapid Storage application. The BIOS doesn't seem to think it exists either.

Relevant configuration:

- Corsair 800D case
- Asus Sabertooth Z77 motherboard
- Windows 8 64bit.
- SSD is a 256GB Samsung drive, about 4-5 years old

Things I tried:

- I had no problem screwing it on to the hot swap drive slot.
- BIOS: I made sure AHCI is selected, and enabled hot swap for all 6 slots, cause I don't know which one has the hot swap bays.
- I installed Intel Rapid Storage.
- I updated the BIOS to the latest version (1805)
- It looks like all the necessary cables are connected (I didn't do this - I think DS wires the hot swaps by default?)
- I tried all 4 bays and verified with a flashlight that the connector goes into the drive.

Any ideas on what I could try? Some BIOS setting I'm missing?

Is the drive spinning up when plugged in?

I don't think there's any way to tell if it's powered. It's an SSD so no moving parts that can make noise, and I don't see any LEDs or other indicators on it.

Ah, whoops, I read SSD as HDD Oops

Alright, looks like you checked over all the primary stuff. If you plug it into one of the standard bays (i.e. not the hotswap bay) does it get recognized then? I know that might be a bit of a pain, but it will rule out a lot of possibilities.

It did recognize it, and I noticed that it required quite a bit more force to (dis)connect the connectors, so then I tried pushing it as hard as I could into the hot swap bay and now it works!

So, I guess it was just a loose connection. How boring

Thanks for the help!

In case anyone finds this post looking for help, this is how you screw the drive onto the tray:

And then you push it in as hard as you can, making sure the connector goes into the drive (which is a bit tricky because an SSD drive is so light and small).

Sorry I was late Koi has it right, only thing I like to point out is that sometimes the ports don't line up perfectly so pushing as hard as you can is not the best idea since it can lead to damage, instead, wiggle the swap bay a little while you push in and that should do it for you, and of course as Koi noticed, if your hdd/ssd is not recognized in the bios, then the hdd/ssd is not in place correctly.
