I'm in the process of building up a new system and I came across a question. When I built my last system up WD Raptors were the hot thing to use for gaming. After doing a bit of reading on Tomshardware I'm not realy sure if thats true now atleast till the new Velociraptors come out. So basicly does anyone have an opinion on a good Drive that will outperform the Raptor and also have decent storage capacity?

Raptors are the best performance drives in the consumer market.

IMO...the 80gig is just good enough for my OS. really how much time would you save with a rapter? a few seconds is worth costing twice as much? mmmmm....?
this also goes for raptors and gaming. Edited by brian - 06 May 2008 at 9:48am |

This is why they make more than one hard drive model.

I think that most people would say the raptors are not worth it from a cost benefit standpoint, but if you want the best and are willing to pay for it, who can argue.

yeah if you have the money, sure I would buy that too. But for me I rather upgrade my VC or case or ram at that.

Ya mainly I like to use the Raptors for the extra boost they provide when playing todays MMO's VG/AoC are both 20Gig + installs. The HD has been that one item to realy increase the read performance to cut stuttering and load times down. Was mainly curious if the newer 7200 Sata Drives had closed the gap but it doesn't realy seam like they have. The down side to the Raptors is lack of storage that is till the new Velociraptor comes out but this system will be ordered before then.

I use a 150 Gig Raptor as a primary drive. It's nice, but in retrospect, it probably wasn't worth it. If you really want fast get two small 7200 RPM drives and make them RAID0. That will be cheaper and faster. However, you should also get a big secondary drive for data and for backing up the RAID0.
