Lately every few weeks when I power up my computer it fails to load into windows. It hangs once it gets to the blue spinny circle part. I have to boot into safe mode and do a restore to an earlier date to get windows to boot up.
I downloaded HD Tune application and this is what is shows for my storage mechanical drive: HD Tune: ST31000333AS Health ID Current Worst ThresholdData Status (01) Raw Read Error Rate 111 99 6 36735611 Ok (03) Spin Up Time 93 87 0 0 Ok (04) Start/Stop Count 70 70 20 31316 Ok (05) Reallocated Sector Count 99 99 36 56 Ok (07) Seek Error Rate 77 60 30 108467895 Ok (09) Power On Hours Count 94 94 0 5878 Ok (0A) Spin Retry Count 100 96 97 37614 Failed (0C) Power Cycle Count 70 37 20 31407 Ok (B8) (unknown attribute) 100 100 99 0 Ok (BB) (unknown attribute) 70 70 0 30 Ok (BC) (unknown attribute) 100 98 0 1310758 Ok (BD) (unknown attribute) 1 1 0 205 Ok (BE) Airflow Temperature 75 41 45 487653401 Ok (C2) Temperature 25 59 0 25 Ok (C3) Hardware ECC Recovered 43 26 0 36735611 Ok (C5) Current Pending Sector 100 100 0 0 Ok (C6) Offline Uncorrectable 100 100 0 0 Ok (C7) Ultra DMA CRC Error Count 200 200 0 1 Ok Power On Time : 5878 Health Status : Failed Can anybody explain what this spin retry count is and if this failure is contributing to my problems with Windows? Also, Windows is installed on a seperate SSD drive not the mechanical drive that has the failure.

Hi aceland... I'm a little late to this. Got buried in 34" of snow.
The spin up faults sounds like the drive might be failing. I would back up anything you want. Also check your power connection to eliminate a lack of power causing it to spin up too slow. The reasnon OS on SSD still causes a problem is because on boot, files you have on the HDD also load, not just Windows. Not much else to do that I know of. Good luck. |

remove/disconnect the hdd and see if the pc boots off of the ssd just fine with no errors, if so then your hdd has a problem, you should clone it to a new hdd just incase, it could be on its way out.
hddtune can sometimes report false stuff but since you are having problems and hdd tune is indicating errors, I would clone just to be safe. spin retry count, is basically hdd tune telling you it took this many times to get the dist to finally spin and work at full speed, so for example if on first try hdd tune got the disk to spin at full speed then you get zero for that value, but if the first spin did not achive full speed, then hdd tune trys again and finally on the 20th try it gets full speed, then the value for "spin retry count" would be "20". Now as you can see yours is reporting that it can never get the disk to run at full speed no matter how many times it tried. you can follow my clone guide here |
