I havent been on here in a couple of months so I dont know if this topic has already been mentioned or discussed. But I just wanted to make a comment about hard drives. Many people know about the devastating floods that happened in Thailand. But many people don't know that those floods are the reason why hard disk drive prices have been so high after those floods. Because of the floods affecting the drive manufacturers in Thailand, supply became scarce and demand was still increasing. Therefore, hard disk prices increased tremendously. What annoys me about all this is that these manufacturers in Thailand are now back up and running at normal production levels and everyone expected hard drive prices to go back down and normalize. However, this is NOT happening. Since these companies now know that consumers are willing to pay higher premium prices, they have decided to maintain these unfair price levels and allow them to become the "normal" price level for these products and make more profit. You know what other industry does the same thing? The gasoline industry...

You mean... I will never see 49-cent gas ever again?

Obviously not all hard drives are manufactured in Thailand. So not sure this would be the only reason. Just a year ago I was buying green Seagate 2TB drives for less than $80.00 USD. Glad I bought a bunch of them at that time. To be honest eighty bucks is really low for that amount of drive space. I think prices are somewhat normal now considering what you are getting in return. I also like to buy enterprise drives they are better quality for 24/7 use and usually have a longer warranty.

Its that trickle down effect. Its not going to be over night but more like a year or more before you see prices drop. |
