I also know of other items that are based on USB cables. It basically creates a mini-network. Now if you don't have another computer to do that, then you have issues. The simplest way is to connect the other hard drive in your new rig as a non-master drive. It is either controlled by the jumpers by the power/data ports or by the cable itself. I've done that on several occasions.

We really need to know more about the communication options on your old machine. Assuming your old machine has an Ethernet port, I think you can create a peer to peer network between your two computers without much more than a hunk of Ethernet cable. Google, or maybe even Windows Help, should tell you exactly how to do this.
OR, you could find a free online storage/file sharing site. Upload the file from the old machine then downloaded it on the new one.
OR, you could pull the hard drive out of the old machine and temporarily (?) plug it into the new machine to do the transfer.
OR, there's probably some USB based thing, normally used for syncing laptops, you could buy

ok to be more specific... I would like to take my world of warcraft file out and put it in my new hard drive. it takes 6 hrs approximately to install and download the patches hehe. so that is what im hoping for. What would be required to connect my old hard drive to the new rig? could i buy some sort of extension cable so as to not take it out? Or does anyone know of a file storage site that will hold a file that big? thanks again for all the help :)

I dont think it will work that way sarge - you are going to need to reinstall - but what you can do is go to Fileplanet and pull down all the patches from Day one - I assume you have WoW and the BC expansion. I may be wrong but I dont think you can ghost an entire program and then reinstall on a new PC - registry entries get jacked up etc... Might be easiest to brace yourself for the 6 hrs or just start download ing the patches directly and not use Blizzards torrent system for patches. I recently did an install and used Blizzards system - I think it only took me about an hour to get allpatched up from start to finish - including the game and expansion install.

What exactly is a "world of warcraft file"? is it just data or an executable? Moving executables is at best "tricky". With just a quick look around Google, I gotta admit that I didn't see any sites that will let you do more than 100 Meg.
So, it's back to pull the drive or cable the two machines together. Type in "network two computers" into Google and you'll get results like this:

You could also pick up a failry cheap external hard drive and push it to that. They might even make a thumb drive that big or maybe a little microdrive. An external hard drive is probably cheaper. |

This is exactly what I did when transferring all of my City of Heroes info to my new computer. Worked like a charm, and I avoided the long six hour download.

Only an hour using blizzards ingame patching system? I can handle that lol wonder why its taking people 6 hrs to install and download the patch then? Thanks again for all the help, im such a noob at this. It is an .exe file, so moving the whole file probably wouldnt work.
Edit: Ok i took a look on fileplanet.com and i can download the 2.4 patch which will update ANY version of the game to the current patch. I have a 4gb memory stick. Can i download the patch, then put it on the stick and install on the new rig once the game is installed? The patch is just about 1gb in size. Edited by sargeman - 07 May 2008 at 1:05pm |

Sarge - I think since there are so many seeds out there now given the popularity - and so few people accessing it compared to when it was originally released - it has become easier to do. Of course this also depends on your connection speed.

You can get all the patches for World of Warcraft @ http://a.wirebrain.de/wow/
It takes about an hour to install the full game and an hour to patch to 2.4.1. |
