If I get a smaller hard drive does that mean that my loading time for games would decrease? Sorry if I sound like an idiot.

No, typically the larger drives are faster, but it is also depends on the make and model. WD velociraptor 300Gb is faster than all typical hard drives.

I thought that is why all of us old timers short stroked the drives in the first place. Ouch

the size of your HDD won't change load times, the speed and cache of the HDD will make a difference.

all and all your boot time is mainly dependent of the speed of the HDD itself then anything else.
