Hi,

I have a fairly new system and use a SSD as my primary OS drive and have the WD Caviar Black as my secondary drive. After reading a little about that drive I realized it's a high performance drive and am considering swapping it into another system I have where it will be used more. The secondary drive in my new system really is only used for picture/ video storage and programs like Word, Excel etc.. Does anyone know if it's as easy as just unplugging the WD Black drive and swapping it with another drive? Since my OS isn't on the drive I"m hoping it's just a matter of taking it out and inserting a new one and I'm good to go.

Just hate to waste a high performance HD when I think I would be more use from it in another system I have.

Thanks

Yes, you can simply swap the drives. You may have to initialize and format the new drive before Windows can see it. This can be done in the Windows Disk Management area. Here is a guide: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/disk-management-windows-7.htm

Thanks Alex. Glad it's as easy as I hoped it would be.

On second thought would anyone know if I could just put a good SSD in it's place? Is there a reason (other than capacity) to use a standard hard drive instead of using two SSD's in a system? Would I get equal or better performance using a SSD instead of the Western Digital Black hard drive I currently have in there?

Not really unless you do a lot of read/write taks on the drive. SSDs are great for programs and the operating system so you have a zippy user interface.

You will get better performance from the SSD than the WD Black.

In my sys, I have a pair of 240GB Intel 520 SSD's and a 1TB WD Black HDD. One SSD for the OS, one SSD for very large data files (multi-GB) I use often, and the HDD for backing up.
The SSD's are definitely faster than the HDD but unless you have very large data files that you're accessing often, it may not be worth the extra price you pay for a SSD, versus a HDD. The WD Black is still pretty darn fast.
