I don't know of a way to make XP or Vista load software on the D: drive by default. You'd think this location is specified in the Registry somewhere.... Well behaved progam installers give you the option of selecting the disk drive and directory where it will install the progam.

I have the same set up that you do. I let most applications install on the default C:\progam files, but I force games to install on D:

Some applications like M$ Office allow you specify where the application will look for it's data files. I also believe that you can get XP (and probably Vista) to move your "My Documents" directory tree to some location other than C:\

Software installation wizards will always default to c:\ for installing the program. If you want to install to d:\ (or anywhere else) you will have to manually specify it through the installation. Usually done with the custom option (vs typical or normal install).
