I see many super gaming systems configged with standard 7200 rpm hard drives.
In fact... one listed by DS is a 750 gig at 7200 rpm and it says (extreme speed) next to it.
I'm wondering if I really need 10,000 rpm delivered by the VelociRaptor, and how much I will lose or gain. Its a hefty price diff.
Any insights ?

the speed of the PC is based on its CPU, so most likely that PC had a qx9650 or qx9770.
the faster the rpm the faster the drive will spin, if you getting a gaming system or you want something quick, don't skip out on the speed of the HDD, you can go with digital Raptor, instead of veloci, you won't notice a big difference between those 2. |

Why are a couple of the 7200 rpm drives, such as the WD 750 gig, listed with (extreme speed) next to them ..

for a 7200rpm those 750 and 1TB HDDs are brand new and in when it comes to 7200rpm HDDs those 2 are the fastest of them. But again, nothing you would really notice.
Raptor and SSDs also have extreme speed next to their name, that does not mean that a 750 7200rpm HDD is as fast as a Raptor or a SSD. I don't even know why they are presented that way, makes a person that does not know think no matter which of the 3 extreme HDDs they go with, its the same, but the size is different. Personally I don't have a day to spend, backing up or defraging or scanning with anti virus. can you image how long it will take you to scan your HDD if its that big? the 750 and the 1TB should say extreme storage and extreme headache for maintaining. Do you think DS would let me buy a full copy of Vista 64 bit on my end and mail it to them in the original box for installation on my newly built system ?

I didn't know if I could ask that question in the open forum, but I did anyways. No .. its not because of price ... it will cost me more for a full copy ... I just like to have the original software and license when it comes to MS. So you don't think DS would have a problem with that ? Who would I contact before I order ... my plan is to order on Oct. 1st ... the day after my BD (waiting for xtra $$ |

I believe you get a licence, don't you?
I'm pretty sure if you called them and aked them to sell you a full one, they would, so you don't have to go and buy one the ship it, etc., etc.,

He's referring to the difference between a retail package and an OEM version of the OS. In the past, a retail package was technically okay to use on any system within your home. My understanding is that the policy changed when XP came out however. Of course, it doesn't stop people from "pirating".

If you ask me, you can't pirate something you own.

FYI- DS will install a copy of any windows OS without a CD key- sooo if you buy your own copy, you can just enter the serial into the system when you receive it. |
