Topic: Hardlock and Loud NoisePosted: 31 Jul 2008 at 1:35pm |

Since I received my computer I have been having issues with periodic hardlocks, sometimes with a loud noise through the speakers and other times without. I have tried everything that I can think of and need some help...I have disabled the sound card and still gotten hardlocks (without the noise). I received it OC'd and returned everything to factory specs and still had the issues. I have run stress tests at stock and OC'd sometimes with hardlock, and other times without issue. Then the other day when I was trying to boot up the computer after it had hardlocked with the loud noise, it wouldn't load Windows saying that there wasn't an OS installed. I re-installed the OS and booted it back up, just to have it hardlock twice when I was putting everything back to the way I wanted it (specifically turning off Vista Extras and installing Live Onecare). I have read about several other people having the same issue with the SB X-Fi card and Vista64, but I think that would only be the cause of the hardlocks with the noise (turning off my speakers cuts off the noise). Any help would be appreciated! Let me know if you need more info! Below is my rig: Q9450
790i Ultra (BIOS 6.0)
4GB DDR3 Corsair 1600MHz
2x 8800 GTX SLI (Driver: 175.19)
Liquid Cooled CPU Vista Ultimate 64 Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Gamer

If you want to validate that remove the sound card and try rebooting, if the sound card out is enough to stop the issue then you know the problem.
After that you need to decide what you want to pursue. Dave ![]() |

I tried it with the SB X-Fi disabled and it was still having the issues...wouldn't that be the same as if it was out? |

No.
Disabled is not the same as out. I have had cards with bad components cause a short or other electrical problem, which will not be rectified by disabling the hardware Dave ![]() Edited by Kliebor2 - 31 Jul 2008 at 1:49pm |

Alright, well, that still doesn't fix it. I took out the SB X-Fi, unistalled all the drivers and set up the mobo sound =/ Still got the hardlock 1 min in the game with the noise again...not quite the same but similar...

Since the sound card removal didn't work, my next guess would be RAM.
1. Make sure your RAM is set to its rated speeds, 2T command rate, and proper voltage in the BIOS. The 790i board doesn't default the command rate and voltage settings correctly. Set the RAM to manual - "optimal" settings will incorrectly default to 1T.
If that is already set correctly or doesn't solve the issue:
2. Remove and reseat the RAM.
If that doesn't work...
3. Run Memtest to see if the RAM gives errors (or you could do this first)
If Memtest gives errors you need to replace your RAM, if it tests ok it maybe be a motherboard issue with handling the RAM which can be determined by:
4. If you have 2GB sticks, try putting them in the other set of RAM slots. If you have 1GBx4 try removing two sticks and trying both sets of slots
If that doesn't work...
5. Try just one stick of RAM
790i boards can be picky about RAM sometimes even if memtest shows no problems.
Good luck!

I have my RAM set to its rated speed (7-7-7-21,2T: 1600MHz - 1.9v)...I have run Memtest without any errors as well. I will try moving the 2GB sticks to other slots this afternoon. Again thanks for the tips! |

You got a bad HDd as it would not see your OS...
You got something there, I read right over that part and just focused on the BSODs and hardlocks.

I don't think it is my HD, everything loaded up fine agian after it happened. I think the OS just got corrupted from the hardlocks. I got home today and have not had an issue yet (fingers crossed) with no changes since last night. I don't know what is going on. I have read some people have issues when they turn SLI on, so I turned it off when I first got on and when it was working fine for 2 hours decided to try it with it back on...still no locks after another hour...YEEHAW! Of course I am ready for it to lock any second now =/
The only thing that I haven't done is load the sound card drivers back on, but I don't think it is that since after I took out the X-fi card and it still happened.
Is it still an HD problem possibility?

Have you tried downloading and running Prime95 and running the torture tests?
If your computer is having any sort of stability issues, it will usually bring up a BSOD or hardlock pretty quickly.
