Topic: HD video editing/gaming buildPosted: 08 Oct 2010 at 6:54am |
|
Hi People! New to the forum. After about a year of visiting other forums and reading review upon review and advice on various topics involving HD video editing PC specs, I have decided to purchase a system. (having the $$$ helps!!)
I built a similar system but with a 980x i7 for about $800 less with other online custom builder. Everyone seems to agree that Digital Storm is the best. I sure wish their prices were a little more competitive though!! Anyhow, my budget is around $2,400. As you can see, I am well over that!! And no i7 980x!! I will be using it mainly for HD video editing and some gaming. Any suggestions on how we can shave the build below to fit my budget and give me the editing power I need?? (and fit a i7 980x???)

I would argue that you will see the required specs with the 950 o/c that you need therefore there is little requirement for the 980X. And your build is significantly over the $2400...(closer to $3000 right ??). I have ordered my rig a few weeks ago and it seems we were pretty close in the same things that we wanted!
I asked about the FTW mobo in my build as I did not know a lot about them but was told be Ender <quote> stick with the evga sli 3, ftw uses nf200, and if you are only going to use up to 2 cards, better to avoid this <end quote> ![]() The Aerocool display - I have read multiple times on this forum that it is nice to look at but does not really buy you anything (for the cost)... I was going to get it but was turned off by the forum - Not a waste of money per say but you could spend it in other places. ![]() The Noctua air system will do you just fine too (for only $30 more) or is there a specific reason you went the Asetek? And you do not have to look after the cooling lines etc that comes with LC, and with the HAF case there is plenty of airflow. Here is what I would do and it is a little cheaper ($300ish) than your original build: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=446424 I am sure Ender will end up tearing me to shreds with this one and coming up with something of his own... Then again maybe not! ![]() Edited by AussieJT - 08 Oct 2010 at 8:20am |

At a glance, it looks like you downgraded the video, but upgraded the motherboard, power supply, and cooling. That seems backward.
Can't you just get 1 really good video card, and you won't have to worry about heat, so no need for liquid, and don't need to upgrade power or motherboard.

I downgraded the video card (I guess you could call it that) based on the initial budget that was stated (roughly 2400). Power supply was not touched, cooling I threw in the air cooling as Noctua can do everything he needs and the HAF case works great for airflow.
With the HAF, you can SLI and still have temps fall within range. The 470/480 series cards run hot anyway (especially the 480) but again the case helps that and its fans are sufficient to keep it all nice and cool. My two cents worth... |

My bad; I was referring to the orignial poster.
Isn't it the case that if you want 1 video card, then a closed case is a perfect fine option with air cooling. The poster appears to favor closed over open, with the case choice and noise reduction.
Whereas, with 2 video cards, you either go open case, or go closed with a reasonably costly liquid option.

oh geez
guys come on there is like a 7 page guide for a full explination on all this stuff!
/slaps all around
1 275+phyx card is a DOWNGRADE FROM 2x470s?!?!?
Negative.
alaskan, please take a little time and look though the guide linked in my signature, there is a ton of helpful info in there.
Also, you said "mainly hd video and some gaming" what kind of use are we talking about here? like rendering HD as a job and playing games for 20 minutes a day?
if you are looking to get the budget down, the first ( not last ) thing to do is ditch the 980x
its really important to know how exactly you want to use it to build this the best to suit you, but i'll say that Aussie's build looks pretty good.
once you give me a little more info ill give you some more suggestions on what to put together Edited by !ender_ - 08 Oct 2010 at 9:24am |

Thanks for the suggestions Aussie!! The build you put together looks solid. I do not need 2x sli at this point. I changed the Video card to a GTX 275. The promotion special says:
1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 1.2GB EVGA CO-OP (2 GPUs for gaming & PhysX)
Kinda confused on this one. Is it 1 card or 2?? If it is 2 that's fine and dandy. I can live with one for now and stay within my budget. It would be nice if there was a way to go with the 980x.(and stay in my budget

You are aware that the GTX 275 is only capable of DX10 and not DX11, unlike the GTX 400 series?
It's a single GPU with dual-slot. VHS size.

Wow! U have lots of valuable info ender! I read the guides and for the most part, you seem to be right on with other guides and reviews I've read.
Here is exactly how I will use my system. I will be doing allot of AVCHD video editing, mostly hobby for now/business later. I play some games and would like decent fps. (COD,AOE III, etc..) I would say right now I will be using it for 60% video/40% gaming.
The NLE that will be primarily used is Edius 5.5. I will also use Pinnacle and Sony for some specific projects.
Yes, Aussie's build looks solid. I changed the GPU to a GTX 275. (budget)
The 980x is the ultimate CPU for intensive HD and AVCHD work flows, but it is outrageously priced!! My dilemma is that I can build a system for $2,400 with that CPU and rock solid hardware at Cyberpower. But I am leery of going that rout because of the negative reviews and complaints. Granted there are plenty of happy customers also!! I just want a PC that will work out of the box and no BSOD!!!!
i am willing to sacrifice the 980x build at cyberpower if I can get a comparably fast system with DS that is stable and well built.

you have to understand that a 980 x is a 6 core monster with HT ... effectively making it a 12 core processor
this is stupid high overkill for pretty much any use today, and at the price? just completely out there in my opinion
for the cost of that chip, you could get a 950 and 2 fermis with liquid cooling, so if you are using cuda-enabled rendering you could probably get as good if not better out of that system and still crush games.. (however this is not in the cards for a budget in your range)
id just go for a 950 + dual 480s, render with cuda (depending on your needs)
the idea for a 275 needs to come off the table, the card is outdated plain and simple
as far as cyberpower, im not really going to address that as it has been beaten to death time and time again in these forums, feel free to seach for such threads if you wish.
for your budget and use, id suggest a 950 and 2 fermis.. the problem is that ANY more processor power is just too overpriced, especialy for your budget

Ok guys! Thanks for all the suggestions and help. Here is my new build.
Please keep in mind it is mainly aimed at AVCHD DH video editing...then gaming. Please comment if I need to change anything...

theres another video editor that will show up every now and then on the forums and he knows way more about video rendering than me but its my understanding that you would be better off with sli+cuda rendering than using the processor
im just not sure tho, i dont render enough for that to matter to me, need to read some on it

Really sorry to hear about the cyberpower decision, Id have suggested even Dell over them :P Good luck maybe you will be the one in 100 customers that get a good machine from them......Seriously even a generic Bestbuy box would be a safer bet .... (I only say that because I bought my wife a computer from cyber power once.)

Thanks for the suggest. guys. MagiK..I suspect the majority of the issues with cyberpower are the cheap intro parts for their basic configs. I went with a gold cert PSU at 1ooow. and upgraded all other important hardware. I hope i get a good working pc from them.
