So i just got my machine and i'm loading it up with programs. I want to take advantage of the SSD for gaming and apps i use alot like MS office, but i'm not sure where to install them.
1. There are two program file folders on my SSD. One has an x86 next to it. What is the difference? 2. Do i just create a folder on my storage drive called Program Files 2 and install the apps there that i don't need to be as fast? Also, any suggestions on how to move media folders (libraries?) to the storage drive? I think they are on my SSD but i'd like to move them. In xp you could right click them and change the target location. Can't seem to find that in win 7. thanks! |

If you want something to install on the SSD, just let it install in it's default location, don't worry if it's about x86 folder or not.
As far as moving stuff over to the HDD, just dragging it over is as easy as anything...just highlight the folders you want and place them in the folder on the HDD you want. Highlighting and cutting the stuff you want to move would be at least as fast as using the old right click method if you're transferring in bulk. What I have is a SSD and then 2 HDDs in RAID1. I only have the OS, Office, some small applications, and games on the SSD. I made a series of folders in the RAID hdds called 'my documents RAID' - that has MyMusic, MyPictures, etc. all inside of it. I then made a shortcut on the desktop to that folder, so the 'my documents' folder on the desktop actually goes to the RAID MyDocuments, not the C drive, which has nothing. 1. You are using 64 bit os, they have 2 "program file" folders.
since the os runs both 32bit and 64bit apps, it needs a "program files" folder for each. the "program files" is for 64bit apps. the "program files (x86)" is for the 32bit apps. most apps go in x86 folder since they are 32bit. 2. you need to let the installer of apps/games, install to which ever folder they want to go in, if you install 32bit stuff in the 64bit folder they may not work correctly or at all. As mentioned just drag and drop your stuff to the hdd. Some apps in their settings will allow you to move their folder that contains media/personal files. Edited by DST4ME - 24 Jun 2011 at 8:43pm |

thanks guys. before I even got to move the stuff around i managed to F up my new machine...
i bought a belkin easy transfer cable to transfer settings and media files to my new computer. i thought it was going to be the easiest way... after it ran for 4 hours i just tried to log in to my new computer and it says "your account has been disabled" i finally managed to get logged in (using a username and no password that didn't previously exist on either machine ) and it looks like the transfer moved everything to the SSD which is now full...even though i told it to move stuff to the HDD. looks like i will get to move it all again manually anyway. guess i could have saved the $20 on the pos cable.I just want to play some starcraft dammit and see what these 570s have got!

I got startcraft going last night after about 2 hours of updates. it's blistering fast and it looks great. everything loads in like a nanosecond. i'm glad i got the 120gb ssd though because just loading office, sc 2, and dao has filled it half way up. I'd like to get rift today and i still need to load GW...
I'm going to get some pics up later. In the meantime I'd like to figure out what's up with the accounts. Every time i start up it says "your account has been disabled. please contact your administrator". I can still log in using one of the accounts i added but it's kind of annoying and I read online that if the local admin account is disabled some functionality is still lost. Does DS add an account for testing that automatically expires? |

I think you messed-up something when moving your preferences over.
You may have to create a new admin acount and get rid of the old one. they use our account to test. |
