After having bought my DS pc in 09 it still going strong, the only upgrade that I've had the need for has been a new video card (GTX 770 2GB). With W10 coming up, I want to grab a new Hard Drive, the one I am looking at are the 500-600GB WD Velociraptor(s). Anything Higher than ~250-300GB are SATA 6GB.

I have an Intel X58 LE SLi motherboard which on EVGA it lists the specs as

Supports over 6.4 Giga-transfers per second but being SATA 3gb

6 SATA II 3.0GB/s ports.

So, I am thinking that grabbing anything higher than 300GB won't be supported by my Mobo.

I'd like a raptor with high GB Cap, but I am open to an SSD also, budget is under 300$, that is why I was looking at the raptor.
Thanks in advance for the help.

You can buy nearly any hard drive you want to be honest. Sata III is backwards compatible with Sata II ports.

Truth be told, you won't notice a performance difference between a Sata 3 vs a Sata 2. Most hard drives have a max read/write of something around 100mb/s (give or take like 20mb/s).

You won't even come close to utilizing the full bandwidth of a Sata 3 or Sata 2 by using any hard drive.

The only time you'll start to run into these issues of running in to bandwidth restriction is when you start buying SSD's that have a read/write of 500mb/s or higher.

To break down the math to make more sense:

3 GIGABITS = 375 megabytes (note the difference there... bits vs bytes).

If you were to buy an SSD with a 500mb/s or higher, it would run at ~375mb/s. That's the biggest difference.

Long story short, buy any size you want really (with the exception of drives like 4TB or higher... you'll have to research your board to make sure it can read and understand those larger drives... most can).

Yep, thanks for the info, I did some research that took me Tom's Hardware and that answered my question. I was bit buzzed when I wrote my question which after re-reading it was all over the place haha.

Thanks again for the answer, I already pulled the trigger when I read this hehe.
