Ok, since I purchased my new computer I spent more on perephials as I did the actual computer! Between monitors, game pads, wireless adapters, printer/fax, 5.1 speakers, usb flash drive, etc. My latest debate are headphones-I needed something for night listening. I game occasionally but mainly use 5.1 for movies. I went with the Xtreme Gamer so here are my questions.
I know the Xtreme Gamer has the CMSS-3D to simulate 5.1 on headphones and that fact made my decision tricky. I originally was going to go with Turtle Beaches HPA2's for the built in speakers. The reviews looked good but I also read the the Xtreme cards CMSS worked as good or better than true 5.1 phones. After reading the reviews I looked at Sennheiser's HD280 Pros that got great reviews but are not 5.1. So my question is, which do you guys think is the better choice-a pair of true 5.1 phones like the HPA2's or a better set of stereo phones like the HD280's and use Creatives CMSS feature for positional audio? |

I'd take real speakers over sound fields any day of the week.

Have you had a chance to use the CMSS with stereo cans? I've read good stuff about both options but i didn't get a chance to try it out. I was thinking since using Vista pretty much renders the hardware support useless, instead relying on software- so maybe I could use one of its features, namely CMSS. Anyone here use a decent set of stereo headphones with Sound Blasters CMSS-3d feature? Does it sound decent for positional audio? If its not really that great I'll go with the HPA2's, although I've heard mixed reactions to those as well. Maybe just get both and be done with it.
![]() Edit-Well, I took a leap of faith and went with the Sennheiser HD 595's. Supposedly these things sound great so I'm relying heavily on the Xfi's ability to simulate surround sound. I never used the CMSS function so have no idea how well it works. I tried googling info on it but the reviews focus on the X-Fi card itself and only throw a snippet or 1 liner mentioning the CMSS feature. Ah well, time will tell!
