What should my core temps be running at normally (i.e., browsing the web or just word processing...)? It's winter here, unfortunately, and I have the heat on most of the time... my core temps are about 45 degree's, no load.. I don't want to see what it goes up to during gaming, probably 65 or so... Is this normal? My QX6850 is OC'd, by how much would that raise the core temps? it's OC'd to 3.33 Ghz, should I restore the default clock speed? would installing the two top fans on the extreme case decrease the temperatures substantially? Thanks |

Idle temperatures for Core 2s should range from 20C to 50C depending on ambient temperature.
Normally load temperature is ~15C higher than idle temperatures. If you want lower temperatures, you have to lower the vcore. What is it at now? Put your hand beside your current exhaust fan and if you can feel the heat. Adding another will help. But getting a better heatsink and thermal paste would help a lot more assuming your case has decent airflow. Edited by skyR - 10 Jan 2008 at 8:42pm |

It feels warm, not hot though... how do I check the vcore?

using cpu-z (because I don't know how to get into my bios, im a retard), I see it changes between 1.176 - 1.2 volt

cpu-z is never accurate and your numbers prove that. With a vcore of 1.2, you must have an ambient temperature of 40c or your heatsink is poorly mounted.
to get into bios, you restart or boot up your pc and press DEL repeatedly until it enters the BIOS. Edited by skyR - 11 Jan 2008 at 11:39pm |

okay I looked in bios,
CPU Core - 1.32 v
CPU FSB - 1.2 v
Do you think the heat sink is poorly mounted? I thought DS would have checked all of this before shipping it out. Right now the temperature in my place is 24 degrees celcius, idle cpu temp is an average of 45 degrees.
A similar system (http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=201803010&pgno=3&queryText=) with the same heatsink, freezer pro 7, should be cooling the 6850 to close to ambient. Edited by pgs8113 - 11 Jan 2008 at 11:47pm |

45 C is alright for a OC quadcore, nothing to concern about. My CPU temp is around low 42 C at 1.4V --idle ( room temperature about 24 C and the board temp is about 14 C). At full load it usually get close to 50 C but that's about it. You only need to be concern if it get to the 70's under full load.

I have a smoking DSO rig, and it pukes out the heat like a space heater. My core temps at idle range anywhere from about 37 - 45 C (Every one is always different). When I get in and do some heavy gaming for several hours at a time, they have NEVER gone over 51 - 52 c... EVER.
If you are getting up to 65 C, I am thinking you may have some issue. One easy one: Have you cleaned your grates and fan blades and air intakes regularly? I have seen people that never open up and clean their machine have so much built up lint that it looks like a plugged exhaust vent from a clothes dryer!

Thanks for the reply dog lover, I just received the system from DS about 3 weeks ago so nothing has built up yet (my gf thinks im a nut always looking in the case).
I am going to buy some 120 mm fans for the top of the extreme case to see if that gives me something and also inspect the cpu cooler. Lately the cpus have been around 58 degrees under load, I think I had the heat up really high one day and it hit 65.
I'll keep the forum updated

Yes, try some fans... a no brainer is to install them the correct way to suck the heat out!
That said, if you are heating up that much, you DO want to work on some cooling options. Heat is a killer for any custom rig. You may want to call DSO and talk to them and see what options and ideas they give you. I really do not think that it should be that hot, ever!

just an update, I installed two antec tricool (blue LED) fans on the top of the TJ09 case and the idle temp of the cpu's has dropped to ~36 degrees (ambient 24).
The antec fans are pretty quiet too considering I have them both on high. Anyway, im happy with these temps, I suspect the temp under load will be around 50, which is great (for me at least).
Thx all
