i would look at building around an X99 platform if usage involves dual roles (gaming and work station).
i'd also suggest upgrading you cpu cooler. the Noctua D15 is a top-end air cooler and the Corsair H100i GTX is probably the best available (unless you special order) AIO water cooler. there's also the option of custom open water loop cooling, but much more expensive. for mobo choice: will he need wi-fi? overclocking importance? more than 2-card sli performance now or in the near future? i'd recommend increasing system memory capacity to 32GB. since you have the DS fan control board selected you should change your lighting from "remote-controlled" to the DS RGB LED lighting which can be run from the within the OS/software of the control board. i'd also suggest changing the case fans from the colored LED (blue) fans to non-LED fans because your case lighting will be more than sufficient and give you more color choices. |

Hi Amahoney and welcome to the DS forums.
I'm sure the configuration gurus will be more than happy to assist you in getting the right machine for your son for everything he does. I just wanted to welcome you and to let you know that I had to delete the duplicate thread. (There were no replies, so you missed nothing.) Have a great day and good luck! |

Hi Amahoney... IF this is for gaming and moderate + video editing then I agree with db and go with the X99 platform. The Apollo level 3 is a great place to start. Even just for gaming the X99 isn't a bad way to go. Added cores, 4 to 6 core, might get more use in the future.
What monitor resolution will you be using? If its 1080p then a single gtx 970/980/980ti will play with no problem. I also don't think I'd go with the fan upgrade. The Apollo 760T case comes with 140mm , AF140L, fans with the same airflow as the ones you selected. A little noisier though from the specs, so really up to you.
