Topic: help needed Posted: 06 Nov 2009 at 5:56pm |
I just spent days working on a config on the CP site. I finally settled on a nice rig and kept reading all the horror stories of service, product, delivery etc. then i found this website with glowing reviews. my issue is i was looking to spend about $1550-$1600max and to get the same system here that I did on CP ($1551) it costs $1948 and that's only with 3GB RAM (vs 6).
here are my (major) specs that i had on CP:
I need help trying to get a comperable system. Primary uses will be gaming and photos. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks |

msc728 cp's systems are crap that is why they cost less, they use quality parts here so they cost more money, also they don't oc and put it under warranty do they?

you have to pay for the OC and there is a 3 yr warranty, but good luck getting service. Are the parts here retail/new or OEM parts. Also, do you have any suggestions on a comparable system i can get here...I am willing to go $1800 max. i want peice of mind and i know i wont get it with CP so I am willing to pay more here.

ok so how much is it for the oc and I know there is a 3 year warranty I'm asking if the warranty covers the system with oc.
I do have recommendations however the price is a bit higher, however if we go with a 275 then it will be about $200 cheaper, I don't believe that the 5850 is worth $200 more then the 275 when they both have pretty much the same performance, 4 to 7 fps are not worth $200 more and IMHO nor is dx11 support, but I will show you both anyways: Nvidia system: Here you go Ticket# 351048 --- Price: $1789 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $1789 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - ok, so the only difference is the vid card. I like build 1 better. 2 more questions. how is the noctua fan (i would pay more for the CM v8 if available)? Also, when the 300 series comes out from nvidia can i run SLI with the 275 or do they have to be the same (ie 2 x 275 etc) thanks for your help!

My pleasure boss
ok lets see 1. v8 is availabe for less, but Noctua is better and is more quiet and the price difference is like $15, go with Noctua its the right choice and why I piced it. 2. they have to be the same, however the fermi is suppose to beat the 5870 line, in short a fermi will give you the performance of 2 x 275 but in one card and no internal sli, the new cards are gonna be powerful and will perform like 2 of the current cards. if you have an old gpu that you can drop in that last config and just wait 2 or 3 month, you can then take the money for gpu and put it into a nice fermi, this way you will spend less and have double the gpu performance, even better then the 5870. the fermi is suppose to have better power usage then teh current cards so if it has the same needs as a 275, then you can run dual sli 275 or fermi if you wanted to. I think it was i7 extreme 1 prebuild, I used the same cofig for all of them, the only difference between them is that the first one has a 275, second one has the 5850 and the third one has no gpu.

DST, need your advice again.
1. I think in sometime in the near future I wl add another 275. wl the 750 PSU be good for that.
2. Are there any other improvements/suggestions to build 1, i think i can get my budget to $2k.
3. help me pick out a case...i cant decide and it's holding me up!!!
i like 932, but am leary about the dust, b ut i could add filters myself. Sniper has dust filters and great airflow as well and is all black..arg!

1. yes
2. only things I would change if there is more money are: a. go with 932 b. if you see your might need tri sli or something like that in the future then go with 1000w corsair. 3. sniper does not have the room of 932, I would go with 932, more room better temps and can take bigger mobos. awesome bro congrats!!!!!!!! the sniper has a meshing on one of the sides of the case and it doesn't really do much since you have other fans blowing dust around anyway... and there is only 1 mesh. frozencpu is where u can find filters if u need

congrats bro!!!!!!!!!! on the cs sniper case the only fan that has a "filer" is on the left side of the xase. it is only a mesh tho and not a true filter. all the other fans havezero filtration and will blow dust around anyway... might as well go with the 932 it is the best case in my opinion. i just wish it had more style!

If i were to get a new monitor (looking at hp 2159m). i would be gaming at 1900x1080. Is it essential to get 275gtx in SLI? Right now or should i say soon i will have i7 920 overclock to 3.4+, 6 mb ram, 750w corsair psu, and 1x275gtx (pretty much build 1 on the prev page). thanks!

if you want to run games at highest settings and they do support sli then you will need 2 x 275 for that res.

ok this may be a dumb question, but how do i know if a game supports sli. Fallout 3 says enhanced for mulit core, red faction:guerilla say same but also direct x 10, Halflife 2 not sure and not sure about Cod mod warfare 2. none of them said SLi on the packaging anywhere.

OK, I will take a shot at this one. Games don't know the difference. The SLI stuff is out of the games hands(pretty much). I hope this helps but more knowlegable folks will reply. This board has a HUGH brain trust within it. Some folks are just more willing to help than others.

sli does depend on the game, if the game does not support it then you can't use sli.
just fyi |

False. As long as Nvidia has a SLI profile for the game, SLI will work. If Nvidia does not have a SLI profile, you can make one for the specific game. Some engines/games will scale more efficiently than others, but SLI will work with all games.

OK, SLI profile does help, but it does not provide the same performance gain as actual sli.
in short sli profile is not the same as actual sli support. some sli profiles will provide very little performance gain. we have tested this on many games on this forum alone, last year if I'm not mistaken. Edited by DST4ME - 13 Nov 2009 at 6:29pm |

all the profile does is enable SLI, how well it scales is a different story, that is up to the engine/game.

At this point, to game at 1900x1080, what is better. 2 x 275gtx or 1x5870.
It seems as though the 5870 is more "future proof". It would cost about $16 more for the 5870 (which is in stock at newegg) vs the 2x275. I'm sure performance is close but Nvidia has no direct x11 support a s of now. I'm thinking of changing my rig...yet again, but my window is starting to close...thanks!
