Budget:
[0-250] Expectations: [Internet Surfing,Video watching, Dota 2, Upcoming batman game Arkham Knight] Hello gents! it's been a while! my rig is due for a slight upgrade i think. When i bought my rig back in July of 2010, I tried to max out what i can vs my budget to "future proof" this. And here we are 4 years later and i "think" my video card is slowly going out on me (random video glitches + 1 blue screen) So my goal is to ask the esteemed members here what I should replace my current video card with and if there is anything i should add/replace as well (maybe the new video card needs additional ram? etc) Here is my spec Case: Cooler Master CM Storm Sniper Processor: i7930 2.8 ghz (quad core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports SLI or CrossFire) 6 gb ram DDR 3 1600 MHZ Digigtal Storm certified 1000w Corsair Power supply (Dual/tri/quad SLI compatible) Vid card : 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 1 GB Cooling: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 Extreme Performance Overclocked to between 3.3 to 3.90 500 gb western digital regular hard drive OCZ SSD Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC (self add) blue ray + dvd player , nothing extraordinary. win 7 home 64 bit I don't think I am set up or need a dual video card set up, so i think a single card would do me just fine. I am afraid if i get too "current" or hi-end cards my other parts can't support. So i was thinking of just mid end. First card that came to mind was a GTX 670. But should I just stick with AMD since i had an AMD? What do you guys think? THANK YOU! |

Hi darbedo... It's been awhile and good seeing you again.
![]() Your rig is capable of sli/cf but a single card should do it. I would swap out the 5870 for a gtx 760. It's right at your budget and will almost double your gaming. Here's a link to compare them. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1062?vs=1038 If you want to stay with AMD, then the R9-270x for a few bucks cheaper is about the same as the gtx 760. Either work. The rest of your system is still good. 8gb ram is standard now but your 6gb is still all you need for most games. Hope this helps and good luck. ![]() |

Hi Bprat!
Been a while indeed. So Im on newegg, which "version of the 760" would you recommend? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=gtx+760&N=-1&isNodeId=1 I guess i'm looking at the EVGA version vs the MSI version (first 3 cards on the search results) Somehow the EVGA has less core blow and boost clock than the MSI one. But i heard EVGA is beetter brand? Edited by darbebo - 09 Aug 2014 at 8:25am |

The dual fan super clocked cards like the first EVGA on that page are very popular and will work great, but I like the EVGA single fan cards. Overclocking the gtx 760 only gives you a frame or two better gaming and the dual fan cards, ACX, will dump some of its heat into your case. Being a single card and your setup, the extra heat won't matter much but that's just me.
![]() They say the dual fan like the first one does cool the card better and is a little quieter. The Asus are also a way to go. You can't go wrong with any, but if it was me, and not many want to be ![]() Your choice. ![]() Edited by bprat22 - 09 Aug 2014 at 8:32am |

I don't know how to or plan to overclock the vid card, so it's more of Buying it + putting it in + installing driver. But from your response and me re-reading, it seems like the first EVGA card is ALREADY OC'd for me ( i think that's what you meant)
And being most of the cards i see are dual fans, i think the "next best choice" would be the 3rd card (EVGA @ 244.99) let me know if my deduction/interpretation is incorrect |

Yeah, some of the overclocked cards like the first one come factory overclocked, nothing you need to do.
The third card you mentioned is a real nice card. Go for it. Its not factory overclocked and does have the dual fan ACX cooler. The ACX cooler has excellent reviews. The one I meant , and its just me, is the 13th one down I believe. Kicks all the heat out the back of the case. But, your Storm Sniper with its excellent cooling will have no issues with a little heat going into the case with the dual fan ACX coolers. |

Sorry, I am back... question:
My budget got reduced. Based on my current specs, can the below video card perform nicely? Any incompatibility that you see? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?sdtid=7159632&SID=7f5d808a30244fdea9b0132dcf61a6f1&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16814150605&cm_sp= Edited by darbebo - 26 Aug 2014 at 11:30am |

Looks good to me. About a 50% or so boost in gaming, average, and I think your 5870 and this both use 2x 6 pin power connector.

Yeah, the 5870 is a Pcie 2.1 card and the 7870 is Pcie 3.0 but it's backward compatible with no issues at all.
Have fun. ![]() |
