Looking to get a pair of headphones for a birthday present for my father in law, he has an Asus AM3 MoBo (not sure which one), and only uses onboard audio.  I'm looking at the Tritton AX Pro, which apparently might be an issue based on the connection it uses.  Can anyone tell me the likelihood that his Asus board has this audio output?

digital optical SPDIF

Thanks much in advance.

Most modern motherboards have the optical SPDIF output.

You can look on the back of the computer where the USB ports and whatnot are and look for a (generally the same on all) black square with a gray square inside of it.  In a dark/low-light room you should see red lighting around the edges of the gray square.

If you have that black plug (circled yellow) in the back of your chassis somewhere, you have the SPDIF output. Hopefully that helps some.

How much $$$ for the Tritton?

Might consider a pair of Sennheiser PC 350's. Very comfortable, great sounds,  regular audio & mic jacks. Drawback: they're pricey.

Thanks guys, I needed to order them when I was at work, so I wasn't able to look at the mobo.

I got the Tritton's for $154 shipped from the egg.  They have lots of connection options, he hasn't bought a sound card yet, so figured these might eliminate that need, or will work if he gets one.

Thanks!
