Ok, finally getting around to getting a new microphone - haven't had one in years, but Left 4 Dead is pretty sweet with voice interaction.

Just bought a microphone specifically for computers - even has the jack insert labled pink to match the standard color-coding.  It's an open mic - no push-to-talk buttons.

So, I have the X-fi gamer card with the pink microphone jack.  I plug the microphone in and I get nothing.

Running WinXP, SP3

What I've checked so far:

Under Volume Control>Playback the microphone is not muted

Under Volume Control>Recording control - only the microphone is selected.  Under the advanced properties, I've both checked and unchecked the +20db Microphone boost

Under the creative audio console, I don't have anything to setup a microphone
Under Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Voices and Audio Tabs, the microphone set as SBX-FiAudio.  In running the hardware test there, it doesn't pick up anything when I read the test paragraph

Using Audacity, I can't get it to pick up anything I say
Using Windows Sound Recorder, I can't get it to pick up anything I say

As an interesting side note, if I play an MP3 with the microphone plugged in, both Audacity and Sound Recorder will capture a distorted/garbled portion of the song.  Unplugging the mic drops the input to zero.

Having the microphone plugged in during MP3 playback causes distortion in the song, which can be increased or decreased depending on the volume setting of the mic in the volume control panel.

In Left 4 Dead, there's an option to test your mic - it doesn't pick up any sound.

Any suggestions?

I reinstalled last night - including all of the creative suite from the installation disk.
No dice.

I emailed the same question to Creative, but they said I was SOL (unless I wanted to pay for support help) since I bought my computer on 9/7/07.

Make sure you have the proper recording setting selected in CP>Sound (there are quite a few).

Raise the mic level in the Creative Mixer panel.

Raise the mic level in the Creative Mixer panel.

I've set it to max, and it doesn't pick up anything

Yeah, there's always this.  I've ordered a USB mic from newegg as a precaution, but it's pretty odd that I get such interference with sound playback when the mic is plugged in.

As soon as I got home, I traced the wires coming from the front and saw it.  Got it working now.

Thanks, man
