Hello all!
After seeing my DS laptop in action for almost 6 months, my parents have decided that it's (finally) time to replace the old Compaq (no joke it has Win 98).  They're not hard core gamers, but my mom has been interested in getting a few.  Given their tendency to hold onto systems for a long time and my mom's burgeoning interest in games, I've tried to do a bit of reasearch and pick out a decent setup.  I want to have room to upgrade in the future so I chose a SLi motherboard with a single graphics card.   I've posted a link to the configuration below. Any thoughts?

Since you don't have a Floppy Drive if you upgrade the DVD Burner to a LightScribe for $7, you would not need the Enhanced Interior Air FLow cables as the LightScribe would be SATA connector instead of a ribbon cable.  Thus saving you $18.

Looks good for a desktop. But you said your mom is getting intrested in games. Which ones? If she wants to start playing some of the newer games, might wanna jump it up to the 8800's GPU.

My dad is still running a P3 800MHz, 16mb Videcard, 256mb ram, Windows 98 lol. Gonna get him a dell for like 400 bucks, cuz he just get on the internet.

Thats the machine I started playing Eq1 on back in 1999, I had to role play a deaf character because I had to disable the soundcard for the game to run without feezing lol, so I really coun't hear any game sounds. Fun times.

Or At Least the 8600 GTS, for most things shy of FPS games the 8600 GTS is a decent card, it will not win any awards any more, but it is a solid card with reasonable performance for much less than the 8800 series cards.

like mentioned before, drop the cabling option, go to lightscribe, and i would seriously suggest going to a 9600 gt at least, the rest of that system is quite solid, dropping in a video card thats over a year old with all the rest of that will massivley decrease your preformance

Yes I did not see the 9600 GT option there... it is a comparable card to the 8600 GTS with a few newer bells and whistles and virtually the same performance from what I have heard.

The reason I threw the 8600GTS out there is I have experience with that card where I have not used the 9600GT. I have been running the 8600GTS for about a year and it performs solidly, I see few problems with it and it seems to run most games at middle resolutions even with high levels of detail at a pretty good speed.

Its weakest performance obviously is going to be with high end shooters with lots of moving enemies and particle animation like smoke and shadows. Somehow, I do not picture most people's moms playing Crysis... but, if yours does... wow and good luck :)

also, the type of games she likes would help, but i can tell you off the cuff that you do not want to sli a card in that range, ever. in 6-8 months buying a second 86 or 9600 card would be like burning the money when you could get the next gen of nvidia at that time and completely crush any capability, sli or not, of those 2 cards

sli is ONLY worth the time for top end cards and systems with rediculously huge monitors, missing any of those 3 is a waste of hard earned money

This is really great feedback!  The main reason I'm going with this company as opposed to getting another "off the rack" computer for mom is because of the amazing help and feedback from the forum and employees.   I will definitely switch to the DVD w/Lightscribe.  Mom has been playing with the Sims, Lego Star Wars, and is planning a trip to EB games to find another to get herself started.  I can't see her playing any serious FPS games.  She tends to like the cartoonish RPGs and vintage console games.   Which card would you recommend given those needs?

While I can attest to the strengths of the 8600GT card, I think the 9600GT would be a better choice at its price. Yay! Lego star wars! hehe that's a fun game. I can play RTS and MMORPGs no prob with the 8600GT and the 9600GT is better still! I play c&c3, assassin's creed, oblivion, EverQuest (still!), Company of Heroes, and more. I wish I had a 9600GT, so I would say that your mom would love it.

An overclocked 9600GT will perform on par with a vanilla clocked 8800GT. It's a monster of a card for the price. Having come from an 8600GT which I used to OC to 8600GTS speeds, I can promise you, there is no comparison between the two cards. A 96GT even at stock speeds simply crushes any 86 series card.
