Ticket #477277
Budget = $3600 Needs = Fast App Loads, Multitasking, Fast Windows Start/Shut, Quiet, Cool Uses = Multiple Browsers, Excel Spreadsheets, maybe song/video, all running. No intensive calculations, or video editing. No gaming. Just want speed & complete hassle free. My time = money. Questions: 1) Wait for SB? Admin says SB configs will be out end of today. 2) Is this config the best use of my money to achieve my needs? 3) Any bottlenecks? Overkill? Conflicts? Other preferred configs to achieve my needs? 4) Thanks DSO for offering this forum! Now what if I told you, that you couldn't really tell the difference in noise between any of them? truth is that most of noise from a pc comes from the gpu's fan when under full load, so the case itself, the cpu cooler's fans and etc, dont' really mattter, the haf's fan are quiet, you can look at reviews of many people here that have it. the corsair h70 is not real LC system and it has a fan for its rad also, so don't think when you go lc you are not dealing with fans, its performance is no better then a Noctua, and as mentioned earlier, the fans on the cpu are not noticeable. your mobo is overkill for your use, you want teh corsair psu cause it has its own 5 year warranty, you get faster load in raid so for your HDD1 I changed the ssd to raid 80GB intel, for faster loads and etc, if you have the stomach, you may want to looking into raiding 3 of them for some crazy speeds. I left your HDD2 as it is, I'm sure you have a good reason for doing that, left your HDD3 alone also, tho if you want speed in hdd, picku up the 2GB fass, it gives you speed and room. noise package not needed, trap noise, trap heat, also as mentioned 95% of the noise comes from the gpu's fan under load, no matter what you get, once that fan hits 100% its gonna be loud, that package is not gonna do much, if anything its gonna keep the heat in and make the gpu's fan suck warm air into it making it stay warm and the fan at 100%. you don't want/need to the oc on gpu, and oced the fan will need to run higher, you don't want/need that. windows tweak has no baring on apps speed or anything else's speed. now I would double check to make sure, for your multi app use, the 6 core i7 is better, but for speed I think SB will endup at a higher oc (its gonna have different stages and speeds, expected to be faster then current), which means it will be faster, so you/we have to look at that and see which direction you want to go, I think a 4 core SB will endup higher speed, possibly costing less, we have to see once the config for it is up. DST4ME, thanks for the feedback. I didn't know that about the cases, so thanks for educating.
Question - Why did you go from 160GB ssd to 80GB ssd? Was it just to save $ or is the 80 faster than the 160? Also, you mentioned that the MB is overkill. Why is that? Can you recommend one that is just right for the system and needs? |

My pleasure
I went from 160GB to 2 x 80GB in raid, I did so cause you said you wanted very fast boot/loading/app loading times, the ssd is fast, in raid its even faster in those things. the mobo you see in my build is what you want. |

The reason I asked was that I already had 2 ssd's in raid 0 in my original config.
So basically if I asked you to design the speediest (non-gaming, non-video editing) DSO system for my budget, your config would do it? Edited by DSoneday - 11 Jan 2011 at 12:26pm |

Then there was a mistake, you had picked HDD1 as a 160GB and HDD2 as a 160GB, but HDD one was set to 1 x 160, thats not raid, so is that what that second 160GB as HDD2 was about? Now it makes sense, OK , so you are saying this is what you meant to pick:
Here you go Ticket# 477520 --- $3414 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 970 3.2GHz (Six-Core Gulftown) Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI 3 Edition (USB 3.0 & SATA 6Gb/s) (Model: 131-GT-E767) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (160GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty yes this is a non gaming machine, if it was for gaming, we would be in SB and you would not see a sex core cpu in my config. |

Have a new config w/ Sandy Bridge (ticket 477553) which ends up being a good $1000 savings at least.
Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 (Intel P67 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 2x (80GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) Set 1 Raid Options: Configure HDD Set 1 to a Raid 0 Config - Stripe Performance (Requires Two HDDs) Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Noise Reduction: Noise Suppression Package Stage 2 (Optimized Airflow & Fan Speeds with Noise Dampening Material) Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 4.0GHz to 4.7GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost OS: Yes, Disable and tweak all of the non-crucial services on the operating system 1) I did get the Noise Reduction. Is it worth it? 2) Is the Boost OS not recommended? Would this SB system which is $1000 perform noticeably slower than the i7-970 system? As I said, my budget is around $3500, but it looks like with the new SB, that the extra $1000 is not going to add a whole lot of speed. I want speed and quiet, but I want my system to fall right at the top of the speed chart where it starts leveling off in regards to $ vs speed. I don't want to spend more and more $, and get incrementally less and less benefit. |

the price difference is because my config has a 6 core, for now it will out due the SB in your tasks.
1. again if you look at my post with the builds, I covered the noise package:
2. in my post with the builds:
for this last build you posted, change the psu to corsair,. for better warranty and reliability. at stage one oc both SB and nehalem 6 core will endup the same speed, around 3.8Ghz, the 6 core for now out performs SB in other tasks then gaming. The 6 core will allow you to run more multiple apps at a time then a 4 core. Now for your use, the 4 core might be better, I noticed you said no video endcoding or anthing like that so SB would be better. your build looks good, perhaps you want to look at going with a single ssd, seeing you just want to do spreed sheets ands the least hassle, I think you should just go with single 160GB ssd, change your psu to corsair it has its own 5 year warranty, double check with DS and see if the Noctua is good enough for stage 2 oc for the SB. I don't know why but I thought you were building a pc for video editing and other tasks. |

Thanks so much for your expertise, DST4ME. I'm digesting everything you've posted as we speak...
Last question: Will the HAF 922 case be noiser than other choices given that it's an open air design? Edited by DSoneday - 11 Jan 2011 at 8:19pm |

My pleasure
The fans are quiet, everybody that has gotten the 932/922/942 has reported them being quiet, the ones I have seen have been quiet. after further thought, I'm thinking for your use you don't even need a 160GB HDD, a single 80GB should do you plenty, I also don't think for your use you will need more then 4GB of ram, so this is based on your last config: Here you go Ticket# 477611 --- $2051 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 (Intel P67 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (80GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: Noise Suppression Package Stage 2 (Optimized Airflow & Fan Speeds with Noise Dampening Material) Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 4.0GHz to 4.7GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: Yes, Disable and tweak all of the non-crucial services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Now if you think you need the ram, go ahead to 8GB but it makes no difference in your speed, and I believe 4GB should be enough, last, you can always add more later. The added speed isn't worth the extra $ you think with the 2nd ssd in Raid 0?

I mean it will make it faster, but I'm wondering if you will think that the single ssd is fast enough, they are very quick comparing to HDD. But if you want to spend the money, its up to you, just keep in mind raid brings more hassle, cause now you have to worry about 2 drives failing and the raid itself, but if you clone the raid to a single backup hdd, then if anything goes wrong you can always restore from the clone, but your restore point will be from the last time you cloned, so you might want to clone 2 or 3 times a week, its all up to you.
My thinking is: 80GB intel ssd = fast speed. single intel ssd = least amount of work/headache. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Jan 2011 at 10:41pm |
