I 'd like some help with audio technology since I know practically nothing, but want to learn.

I intend to get a good sound card combined with some good headphones. I have my eye on the Asus Xonar Essence that DS offers.  This is reputed to be excellent for headphones. On the other hand, it appears it does not directly support a 5.1 speaker system (only has two output channels). If this is true, can I simply plug in a cheap set of 5.1 speakers into the on-board outputs (on the P8P67) when I don't want to use headphones? Will the presence of the sound card affect the motherboard sound?

Sorry if this question makes no sense - am very ignorant as you can see!

Thanks.

Sorry for the bump and the boring question but would really like to know the answer. Any thoughts at all?

I don't believe you will get the performance benefits of the card thru the mobo.  Anyway just trying to help yah find an answer until one of the professionals can get to yah.

Found this link about using the card for 5.1 Seems you need something additional to use the card with speakers. I don;t really know anything about this but hope the link will be of some help.

Thanks very much breadCrumb and Jimbo. Smile

Right Jimbo - it looks as though you need another expansion card of some kind for 5.1. Getting a bit too complicated and probably expensive.

breadCrumb, I realize the card won't work through the mobo. What I want is some cheap 5.1 speakers connected to the on-board sound when I want to use speakers and the Xonar for when I want to use headphones. Presumably the card will disable the motherboard sound - meaning I have to disable the card if I want to use the speakers. That sounds tedious if it's true. Do either of you know how easy it is to enable/disable the sound card?  Thanks again.

I think your gonna find it to be a pain, although I've never tried it.  Having USB headphones and using my sound card I find to be conflicting enough, having to go into Volume Mixer and switch between audio outputs and making sure the game or whatever I'm using is also set at the right output device.  I've also found I run into a lot less problems removing the onboard audio drivers as I've had them conflict with the card's.  A lot of forums say the mobo's audio is disabled in the bios once the card is installed, but that has not been my experience.

Unencumbered by any solid logic, it seems to me like the option of setting a default audio device shouldn't be so painful to win7.  But having not fussed around w/ it much, I know I haven't found a good way to do it.  If for whatever reason it is that tedious someone might have a helpful script file for it.

Not sure about your system but I can enable/disable the sound card in the BIOS.

This does not seem practical for what you are trying to do.Disappointed

No I meant it wasn't automatically disabled, not that the option isn't present at all.
